Hi everyone,

I"m about to embark on a long-delayed painting project, and have some coaches which I'd like to do in a TEE livery. Do any of you know of off-the-shelf hobby paints in the USA that are a close match on the beige and red? It doesn't need to be perfect, but I would like it close. I know in europe you can get marklin matches, but I'm not doing a restoration or trying to match other existing coaches so I'm happy just supporting my local hobby shop on the purchase :)

First entry says window ribbion for TEE coaches from 1957 - 1974. This is probably the period of your TEE coaches and E 03. The loco always reflects the colour of the coaches. so they are identical.

So RAL 1001 for the TEE coaches is also the colour for the casing of the E 03/103.
If you scroll down you see RAL 3004 "Purpurrot" (purple red) for the lower side wall of the TEE coaches.

Scroll down further the colour RAL 8019 "Graubraun" shall be the typical colour for frames and bogie.

Further down RAL 7001 "Silbergrau" is named for roofs. If you got a E 03 002 this shall be the correct colour. At least my own E 03 002 has it.

Interesting to know. Once I talked with a Märklin sales man about the colour scheme and asked him, if Märklin is using the colour scheme of the original railway DB. He agreed, but said, if I want to buy single coaches to get my own TEE train together, I have to be aware that are not all TEE coaches using the purple red band. Some red colour is a little bit lighter. So I shall compare the colour before I buy the cars.

TEEwolf- while i have you, if I remember right you have done a bit of repainting older Marklin. do you have a good primer-paint recommendation for? I've heard various types and I wan't sure what will stick well/work the best on older Marklin, or if I just stick to the primer from vallejo or other final coating brand.

I found those in a Humbrol book that one of our local model shops (shop has now closed due to retirement) had in store. The lady proprietor allowed me to take some pictures of those pages with my phone as the book was the only copy she had and was a shop copy.

The Tamiya fine surface primer is a very good choice. I had so far no problems with it and I used it on plastic and metal as well. Just make sure that you prep the surface very well(remove all paint, fine sanding and washing it to remove oils and dust) before you prime. I bought it at various hobby shops including Hobby Lobby. Looking for ward to see some pictures of your project.

All, an update as I turn this into a "how to" thread. I'm travelling next week for work, but the week of the 29th I intend to strip, prep, and prime the coaches. They are already fully disassembled including body from frame etc, all in an effort to do this 100%

Then from there they can sit happily primed while I sample some final paint matches, and potentially get rubber stamping made for the DB logo... (I found a source, the question is what he will charge)
