DOus any one have knowledge if M ever made passenger carriages to go with the Amtrak F7 loks??
ALso next question anyone with knowledge of the Athern? Quality and suitability of running on C track, DO they have interiors and can lighting be fitted. Length of Carriages approx 2505mm roof edge to roof edge. Also any coupler or wheel problems or changes to run on C track
Amtrak HO scale silver passenger carriages. ( 1 diner and 1 coach). Manufactured by Athearn
I have a chance to get these if they are any good. (On Ebay) Thanks.

Hello Nev,
You have the set 43600 with 6 coaches: baggage, diner, sleeper, coach, vista-dome and end-observation car. All of them full metal (aluminum) and with interior and lights but shorter than the real scale.
The Athearn ones, apart from being plastic, don't have interiors. They are lots simpler than Marklin. I don't think they are real scale, but they are longer than the Marklin ones.
About running caracteristics and custom changes, the specialist here is Pierre, but it will depend with what wheels are installed and also the radius you have on your lay-out. Think that american brands coaches (i.e. Walthers) need at least R3.
Then, it will depend on the price of these carriages, but if you already have the F7's, I would go for the Marklin set.

I have these wagons and are very good, they have lights, and interior details, they are very good,i am satisfied.I believe i have posted an image with them at my layout section. They do not have the standard couplers, and i am not 100% satisfied but they do work ok. |

Hello Nev, I have never tried Athearn passenger cars so I can't be of help for this brand. You may find information about Walthers' cars on my website and my comments about Rapido Trains' cars on this forum. I hope this will be of use. Pierre.

I don't think the athearn coaches have interiors. some of the walthers ones do, especially the more recent cars, but I'm not sure about the Budd or sort of tubular profile cars that used to run so much around here. I would say go for the walthers amtrak coaches before the athearn

I think those would probably be Amfleet coaches - I'm not 100% sure but I think Amtrak had retired the F units before they turned up. If you do want to use them, Walthers make an excellent Amfleet 2 but the paintwork on their Amfleet 1 isn't as good (unless they've upgraded it recently - not as good a "stainless steel" finish as the Amfleet 2). Bachmann make an Amfleet 1 that has a better finish. It's also worth bearing in mind that the Bachmann car is probably designed for "trainset" curves while the Walthers models might have problems on tighter curves. For older stock, I would say to go with the Walthers cars. They really are beautiful models. Only snag is that they will not run around a tight curve. |

I suppose that the money get from the sale of the car must be de facto re-invested in Märklin equipment ! Pierre.

Congratulations Nev! You've done a really good purchase and deal. About your space, well, having more place in your garage (and cash for Marklin investment) is a good idea. But remember: The more place you have, the more you want to spend on it! Don't tell this to your House Director, this is for your information only! [:p] Santi

Hi Nev and all fellow forum members,
A happy, healthy and prosperous New Year to all. In the new year may all new M products be as good as #'s 37605 and 37606.
Nev, the coaches look great - well done. Glad the tip off worked.
Cheers from Barbados all!!
