I bought this loco from Rails for £80 knowing that it just had a decoder and no sound. I have taken it down to my local DCC specialists, Coastal DCC and between us we have opened it up to find that it isn't just a simple task of taking out the Marklin decoder and putting a LokSound decoder into it, then add some speakers. The decoder is an old fashioned built in job. The cost of making this sound fitted would be out of my budget so I have decided to have a second look myself.

Way back in to late noughties, I had a shop that sold DCC stuff and di a lot of decoder installs including N scale split chassis locos so I have a fair idea of how to go with this myself. However, I am looking for hep and inspiration before going ahead.

I append some images of the situation. Is there a Marklin way out of this or do I have to buy the stuff and just wade in?

There is a Märklin way: get Märklin 60979 or try to find a discontinued Märklin 60949. You will keep the yellow LEDs this way.

You can get a decoder board from Modellbau Schönwitz along with red and white LEDs incl. long-distance headlights. You also have to buy a decoder if you go this way, could be ESU or Märklin or other brands. For a few bucks more you get white LEDs.

Review of 60948/60949:

If you go the Märklin way, you can easily replace the yellow LEDs with white LEDs as shown here:

That looks good. There is a 60979 on EBay at £80. I will need a speaker but I think that I can do the job myself. What would I do about getting correct 482 sounds?

Well this is what I did for 36851 Elektrolokomotive. BR 482 (SBB/CFF/FFS) :

http://luessi.ch/shop/catalog/p...ath=2&products_id=36

or http://luessi.ch/shop/catalog/p...h=2&products_id=2362

http://luessi.ch/shop/catalog/p...h=2&products_id=2345

https://www.stayathome.ch/Re482_decoder.htm

And add the sound decoder of your choice. I found this a very simple easy way to upgrade the loco.

The original 60979 comes with a speaker and with pre-installed TRAXX sounds for e.g. Re 482.

Then that is the way to go. I have a Piko cab coach to get a decoder in and then I will proceed.

Many thanks for your help.

60979 arrived today.

Ordered on 15th and arrived this morning at 9.15. Bought it from Modellbahn-Center Recklinghausen on EBay. Great service.

Maerklin has a kit for conversion of these models. If you get the Trix circuit board, you can order that and use them to install a ESU or other 8-pin decoder.
The Maerklin version only worked with the in-house decoder.
You can add an aftermarket PC board by Luessi or other, plus a decoder.
In my opinion, the Maerklin kit might be the cheapest option.

I know of one or two modellers who have purchased a newer version of the hobby model with white LEDs and sound and have swapped the shells with the older model.
The Alpaezaehmer version had a retail of around 160 EUR. You could swap shells and then place the non sound one on eBay and try to get maybe 60-80 EUR for it.

Why wouldn't | just install the 60949 that has just arrived?

I began my post by saying that Maerklin has a kit for conversion... You apparently have one... So go ahead and use it.

:-) :-)

I have now installed the Marklin conversion. It went like a dream except for one thing. One of the tabs from the motor broke off! Fortunately, I could get to the base of the tab so I soldered a wire in and everything works fine. The conversion took about 20 minutes.

The loco now runs a lot smoother than it did although the sound is fairly quiet. The volume setting is on max so I guess that's about it. I bought the loco from Rails for £80 and paid £90 for the conversion. NOt too bad.

Does the speaker have an enclosure on the back? That will make a big difference to sound level if it needs one. I am not familiar with the speakers that Marklin supply, but that would be my bet.

The body of the lok acts as the sound chamber. Be sure you orient the speaker so it faces into the body of the lok. If you still think the sound is too low you can replace it with a 20mm 4 ohm speaker from ESU.

The Hobby Traxx have a mounting point for the speaker on the underside.
