Hello all:
I have begun buys some K track to begin a modest layout. If I buy switches on eBay will there be older generations that don't work as well as the current design? It's not always a saving if it results in poor running track.....

I would stay away from the 2100 series and stick with the newer 2200 series with solid rails. You also have a choice between the points that have the built in solenoids or the manual ones that you can add detachable drives to or install servos instead. I have switched mine over to the manual type and converted all to servos. Very happy with that decision.

If you buy slim switches, then stay away from the older ones with "movable frog". |

Thanks very much! I have been using servos. If I buy the switches with the turnout motor can it be removed to use with servos or is the attachment more permanent? I am not afraid of a little Dremel surgery!

The attachment is more permanent and you don't have the insertion spots for the manual levers (for servo conversion) and lanterns. I'm sure it can be done but it is not as straight forward. For example the 3 way switch only comes with attached solenoids and I recently issued a separate post if someone has converted these to servo control and I got no response from someone who has done it.

I am not afraid of a little Dremel surgery! You could remove it, with the issues that PMPeter lists, but apart from that you also loose part of the sleepers, on the side where the motor was attached. I remember seeing some photos of this in an older Märklin Magazine. It looked kind of strange (I didnt like it) with the missing sleepers, but you might be able to camouflage it with some scenery... |
