Hi all,
Its good to be joining the Marklin Community.
I recently binned my entire Hornby setup and retooled to 1960s Marklin analog.

My first engine is the model 3005: BR 23 with metal body. Looking at the Marklin Service Manual there are a number of smoke generators available but none specifically for the 3005. Doing a google search I found a few 3005 engines that were converted to smoke but no information on the products used. Can anybody point me in the right direction please?

Cheers,

Jeff 3005 Loco.jpg

The 3005 has a plastic boiler therefore no smoke generator was ever offered. If you did see one it was a custom job as the the heat from the generator will melt the plastic boiler. I have heard that some people have done this, perhaps even on this form - Fred

Hi Fred,

That's not quite true - only the first version of the DA800 (the predecessor to the 3005) had a plastic boiler. Jeff's one will be metal.

Here's a link to some instructions on installing a smoke generator, written by another forum member:

Hi Peter and Fred, thanks for your replies. you beat me to it. Yes my 3005 has a metal boiler. I've asked for pictures of the soldering job.

To summarise that thread:
drill out chimney, (so long its a metal boiler),
solder a wire onto the bottom connection from the [smoke] generator to the shoe and solder that to the shoe pick up.

Total of 2 wires soldered underneath the shoe.
One to the engine , as is, and the second to the bottom tip of the [smoke] generator.

Cheers,

Jeff

Hello Jeff,

I too have this loco and the boiler, as you say, is made of metal. It is old ( ? 3005.8 : BR 23 - 014)

I have in the past contemplated that one could drill out the smoke funnel to take a smoke unit, but this remains on that long listSmile
