Hi all,

A while ago I reprogrammed my control software to Loconet. A big change in philosophy is that you have to allocate a loc address to a slot, and then send commands to the slot, instead of sending the commands to the address directly.

Is it possible to send commands directly to the loc address in Loconet, thus circumventing the whole need for slot allocation?

Best regards,
Gregor

As has been explained on the Loconet Hackers forum there are distinct problems with attempting to send messages direct to a loco on Loconet.

In practice with other command stations even though you appear to be 'sending a command to a loco address' you are actually updating the equivalent of a Loconet Slot in the command station, so that the command station knows the speed the loco should be travelling at so it can repeatedly send the information to the track to keep the loco doing the correct thing. This is needed as was pointed out on the Loconet Hackjers forum the decoder needs repeated refreshes of the information to so it knows to keep running and that it should be running in digital mode instead of analogue mode.

Digitrax just expose the underlying methodology by using slot numbers as it also allows them to transfer a slot between controllers and deal with the behind the scenes hoo-ha when muliple heading locos.

Thanks,

I have arranged my main traffic through appropriate slot allocations, but I was looking for an easy way to generate incidental random sounds (a whistle or announcement), without the need to allocate a slot first. It is not a big problem when this command has been missed.
