Hi, going through the past years I've wondered which model do you fancy most. have 2 in mind 3311 and 3371 on a short list, running characteristics, looks and design innovations
Which is yours ?

John in short my two favorite locos is Serie De 6/6 #37521 / #37522 firstly. They look good & run so smoothly & my all time favorite is BR 701 033-3 #39972 "Turmtriebwagen" or Catenary maintanance car. It always gives me a thrill to operate this loco [img] [/img] [img] [/img] Edited by user 01 November 2018 09:23:34(UTC)

BR05 insider, 39050 is right up there. Executed very well. I have a soft spot for the BR38 (Prussian P8) from the 26549 set. Even though the transmission is noisy at speed and the front bogie required some modification to fix traction issues, it's such a beautiful model. A few other favourites are the E91 (39195), the VT8.5 (39080) and the BR64 bubikopf is an excellently designed model too (39644). Oh and the VT95.9 special edition (39955). Is that too many? |

The ones I think are best models doesn't mean are the ones I most use. The one I am more focused now is the Pfalzbahn S2/6 37018. For me the best models, excludong limitations on the functions (synchronized steam, interior lighting, rising pantographs and Telex) are:
Electrics: the new Crocodiles
Diesel: VT11.5
Steam: The Bigboy
About steamers i must say: I don't have a NCF 241-A.65, but I think if I did, it could be number 1. I also like a lot all BR18.n (specially the blue/grey C) and the BR96s S2/6 37018 has a superb look and is my current favorite Ks, BR50 cabin tender, BR45, BR94 and BR95

John Hello John, I presume you mean which Märklin model. This is my alltime favourite, the 37605 (DB 601/ VT11.5 ): My shortlist continues : - the 39112 (DB 112 269-6) : -the 37349 (Swiss Re 4/4 ll TEE) : and although I was a "late-starter" in admiring and acquiring the 3071 Swiss/Dutch RAm TEE, I quite like it now, even though I am yet to do a complete revovation, à la Svein / Saebonet : as you can see, I am quite taken with the TEE livery! (my wife says "but they all look the same") Regards, Philip

The 39021 & 37588 are two of my favorites. I don't think any diesel or electric can compare to the beauty of a steam loco.

John Hello John, do you think this is really a fair question? One out of a more or less big bunch of already selected locomotives? Thankfully you specify some characteristics for a decision. I think, mine is a model even not yet handed over from Märklin to its customers. It is the new Insider model BR 65.0 - 39650 I find the look, design and innovations really fascinating, even I had not yet any chance for running the model. I hope it equals to its predecessors BR 103.1 long ( #39170) and Ce 6/8 II "Crocodile" ( #39567), which would be next on my short list. Their running is just and only magnificent. Best Regards TEEWolf

I'm surprised the much acclaimed SNCF 241 A or 39241 hasn't shown up. Maybe this reflects the fact that so few members managed to get their hands on one, or maybe it is just too new for informed judgements to be made. Jabez |

For me 3015 and 3025. The reason is the gears and the driving arrangements, not to mention the noise that the 3025 makes when it runs. Allways put a green on my face.

My father had decided that Jouef was rubbish after buying me a Jouef "Super Prestige" Set in 1978: . Impressive presentation, apart from that nothing else really... To be fair to Jouef, I was probably a bit too young to play with the stuff, but the quality was really rubbish, especially the flimsy plastics. So the switch to Märklin occurred at Christmas in 1982. Enter 3054 and 3084. To this date, the 3054 is the model I always seem to get out of its box, I won't get tired of it after 36 years... Solid construction, good level of detail, if only the painting technique of the time had been up to scratch, it would be perfect. I don't mind the scratches though, you can barely see them with the loco racing around the M-track... Look at this beauty :) The eagle eyed among you will notice that even Märklin managed to bend the back coupler on the catalogue picture. Edited by user 02 November 2018 23:33:59(UTC)

This was quite hard to answer. I have to narrow it down. Steam: 39241 SNCF. I love the models of my Big Boys but this Loco has something extra. The golden paint and a strange looking tender and beautifully detailed. Diesel: 39952. It's an amazing small model with quite much attention to detail and runs very good. Electric: 37797 with add-on cars. It has remotely controlled vipers. What's not fun with that?? If I'd choose only one I'd say it's my French steamer 39241. |

Hi, for me the best loco has to be this 3090 I had for my 10th birthday way back in 1972. New tires and brushes plus a drive gear change and it runs as I remember. Cant bring myself to clean all the years of dust! And just look at the cir-clips holding on the con rods!. Unfortunetly the 3000 tank that came with the starter set didn't fair so well...

Hi, It must be the mighty 3021! I have two of them today. I managed to totally wear out the anchor of the older one in the late 60's. In those days it took months to get spare parts to Finland via normal routes from Märklin. You can imagine how frustrated I was at the age of 9 years. They still run very smoothly and quietly. Simply quality! Cheers Åke

I think, after all, the question of the topic is hard to answer as in general we like a lot most locomotives :)
Adding to the ones I wrote in my previous post in this thread, I think the E94s/BR194s are still one of the best (if not the best) pulling machines. It is still rugged and the detail is impressive considering the year it was launched as a Märklin model (1964, so as old as I am).

It's interesting to see how diverse the responses to this thread are! The question posed by John was quite an open one, "Which Marklin model is tops?/which model do you fancy most? Everyone has their own criteria for what they prefer. For some it is aesthetic beauty, for others it is smooth and reliable operation, and for others still it is the abundance of digital functions. Some have preferences based on nostalgia, but others like best the latest model they have bought. There are examples of all of these in the responses above. Anyway it's fun to read what different people prefer! |

Despite John were asking "... which model do you fancy most." - MOST is the keyword and the difficulty to me. This was and is the major point to myself too. As I wrote already, out of my done very personal selection, while buying these locos, I have to decide again. Which one does "fancy me most"? As you see, plenty of beautiful locos here. No doubt, but most of the community members have not told us, which is his "fancy most" one? Pity! And yes, it is a hard, a very hard decision, but I think this was the intention of the thread opener. Don't you think, he wanted to challenge us? Which loco is out of your best and personal selection the very best one for yourself? Of course, you may and perhaps even shall say: all of them, because it is my personal selection. Perfectly correct! First I thought in the same direction. Finally I recognized, I do not answer the enquirers question and I did my hard decision. There I did not qualify my decision very detailed, I do not have to wait long for a tut-tut about my decision. So what? Again, back to the roots and do a restart of this useful thread: "... which model do you fancy most?" Of course, you have chosen them all. Nevertheless don't you think, having one, really only one most fancying loco? Yes or No? Short list? Whatever? Everything is possible. Best regards TEEWolf P.S.: Well, indeed I do not yet describe my decision more detailed. Perhaps next time after reading others decisions here.

I just love the Württemberg C & K, the streamlined 03.10's as well as the "newer" S 2/6 and BR96 and, and, and, and...
I do also especially like the "oddities" as the Zeppelin, the Franco-Crosti and such special models...
Too much to like here to pick a single specific item... Would maybe mentally be the 3003 I got as my first loco at Christmas 1963....
And after meeting the 14 305 Croc live in 2015 - love the crocs that were unobtainable to me as a kid in the 60's with a very small weekly allowance... |

It is going to be either quite hard or impossible for me to pick just one loco as my ultimate. But one that will have to be a finalist for me also is my VT11.5. It is one of most beautiful trains that I have ever seen. The amazing part is that I was not familiar with that train before researching and buying mine and I found the body styling a little odd. Wow - was I wrong. After actually seeing the amazing construction quality and heft of all of the wagons, the funky styling, and the attention to detail and paint I was blown away. I also love how beautifully it operates, with a torque monster DCM power unit sitting in a heavy chassis at either end. I can just shut everything else off on my layout and find myself fascinated as I watch that beauty run. I also love how it runs perfectly in either direction, making it very versatile on the layout. Well, maybe I have made my choice and I didn't even know it. |
Regards,
Jim
I have almost all Märklin and mostly HO, although I do have a small number of Z gauge trains!

I never stayed on a VT 11.5, but trains with the "Silberlinge" are very common to me.

Indeed a very nice loco and not black! Very rare for a steamer. And it looks like a little sister of the 241 A. May be one of these days it will be a similar surprise from Märklin as the 241 A was. Cheers TEEWolf

I'm afraid the SNCB-NMBS Type 29 steamer is **not** a close relative to the SNCF 241A If you're looking for any kinship you could say it came from the same factories as the SNCF 141 R postwar locos. These were part of the locs build in the US and Canada after WWII to help rebuild France and Belgium's railroads. 1340 units of the SNCF 141R were build , and 300 of the SNCB-NMBS Type 29 were build. But it would be nice if Mother M would make a model of either one ...or both! Cheers Jacques |

Cheers Jacques Hi Jacques I think I wrote that I had very little, but really very little, knowledge about SNCF rolling stock, except...the TGV. All I knew was that the Belgian B29 had a French cousin but knowing what kind of steamer never really interested me. As you live in France, the SNCF should have no secrets for you. As far as Marklin is concerned, I agree with both of you. Because the engine of the B29 of the Olaerts version is too weak. This loco was climbing the Heildeberg slope alone, but skating with only one coach at the back. In theory, this should be better with my new layout: my ramps go from 3,.9- 4 % to % to 2 %. Have a nice day Thewolf |

For me, that answer would be pure nostalgia... (Like so many others here too , I see ;-)
Steam; BR50 kab. The good old one. So robust and well-running!
Diesel; BR260 Telex. The only loco that I actually still run manually.
Electric; BR103 TEE. Because of... reasons! ;-)
All good old analogue models, of course. All still running on my layout. By far the smoothest and best runners of my +40 humble collection. (I know there are some monster-collections among the users here, but at least I run ALL my trains on my layout. No Shelve-Queens here) |
