A catalogue should be available in September. November is much too late for the Xmas shopping season. But as many interesting items will be sold out anyway there is no need for a catalogue at all. The Märklin catalogue of today needs a complete redesign and should not consist of more than 150 pages. I wonder who is responsible for the present layout. It is a shame for the manufacturer. Just my opinion.

I used to love the days when I could leisurely read the printed catalog and wait for months to order whatever I chose. But those days are long gone for most items and unfortunately you have to decide on the basis of online images if you want to order early or risk not ever getting one. Luckily Märklin seems to realize that because their online images, at least for some of the nicer models are high res and give you enough info to decide on a purchase. It was not until the second set of images were posted for the 39241 that it became apparent that it was worth the high cost and luckily Märklin posted those images within the first week. If I had waited another week I never would have gotten one of these little gems, at least not at a sane price. So I decide on purchases based on the material on Märklin's web site and then later while I am waiting months and months for Märklin to make my items I can gaze at the images in the printed catalog. Living in North American I never see any printed material on most models until I have already made up my mind on a purchase, so the availability date of the catalog doesn't matter much to me. |

Jim
I have almost all Märklin and mostly HO, although I do have a small number of Z gauge trains!
So many trains and so little time. |

Hi Martin, That is a very interesting observation. I use the catalogue to check on accessory items such as track, signals, decoders etc because they are conveniently located within sections. I don't know the item number, and the catalogue makes it easy. Try searching the database for signal..... or decoder .... I believe Marklin can produce an annual catalogue for the accessories only, and the spring, summer and autumn catalogues can contain the information on the new locoomotives and rolling stock. If I was a director of the company, I would be asking about the cost savings if the annual catalogue was reduced to 1/3 to 1/4 the size. Kimball |

That is certainly what it is. Maybe they should call it a "yearbook" instead. |

Exactly! A catalog in the digital/online world is a website and not a hunk of paper which would always arrive too late anyway, especially here in NA. I do like the current "yearbook" though, because within it I find a nice summary of what they produced over that year. I also find useful references to accessories such as signals and feedback modules, which you never see in any other Märklin advertising format. They often highlight useful guides to the details of track geometry and turnouts, which can be hard to find elsewhere. So from my POV it has a valid purpose, just not something that you look at for months and then finally order whenever you want. I have fond memories of doing that myself but those times are gone, and mostly for the better. The high res photos that Märklin published for several of their top HO models in the last 2 years were good enough to actually see that the locos were worth the high price. If you wait until the yearbook is published and delivered, a large percentage of the items will have been sold out for months, even if none have been delivered to customers yet. That used to be rare but now it happens on most of the top end or special models that they offer. I assume that is good for corporate Märklin but makes collection a bit of a crap shoot. On the other hand it helps to hold up the model prices in the used market, assuming that you picked wisely. |
Regards,
Jim
