Have started to collect old Marklin catalogues, aim is to complete the range from 1955 (my year of birth) upto including say 2010.

Years 1979 and 1980 have been found in unread condition, and in Dutch!
Year 1966/67 with the then new E 03 on the front has been found in near to new condition,in German.

These catalogues open a gate to my youth, especially because in those days i could not afford to buy any locomotive!

Some prices in German Marks (DM) from the 1966/67 catalogue:

3047 DM 68.-
3048 DM 55.-
3053 DM 52.-
3050 DM 48.-
3021 DM 39.-
3060 DM 32.-
4060 DM 18.-
3070 DM 115.-
4070 DM 24.50
3148 DM 128.-
3160 DM 68.-
4027 DM 8.20
4727 DM 6.-
7186 DM 69.-
7051 DM 52.-
8032 DM 7.40
8022 DM 2.20

1 DM (or DEM) is approx. 0.50 Euro.

If only i could turn back time.......

Yours is not an uncommon aim. We have a member of our club here in Wellington who was born in 1952. He made it his mission to acquire every item that was in the 1952 catalogue, and I believe he was successful, starter sets included. It's quite some display I can tell you. I think it also includes most Faller items from the same year.

It prompted me to consider a similar thing, my YoB is (late) 1956 so I believe that gives me some license to span 1956 & 1957 giving me the benefit of both numbering systems.

I know I will never get remotely close to all the items, but when you have a focus, it is surprising to find how many items you might already have, and it can help if making a decision between some items, if one of them happens to be in the target range then the decision is already made. I'm not too fussed about condition either. Even if it's well play-worn but still has a passing resemblance to the image in the catalogue, I'm happy BigGrin

Hi,

Prices should never be read without the comparison to incomes. The average monthly income in 1968 in Germany was 903.50 DM. So the 3071 cost 12.7% of an average income. Today these 12,7% of an average wage (3156 EUR) are 402.00 EUR. Who would pay 402.00 EUR for an analogue train with a plastic-body and without sound?

Regards

Markus

I agree Markus.

If you do a correct comparison from the "Good old days" and now, it is usually always less expensive now.

Average wage in Spain these days: 1850 EUR Angry Crying

So, a brand new Insider loco for more than 400 euros is a lot...

Hi Friends.

The 3021 V200 DB diesel was given to me for Christmas 1965, bought at Polks Hobbies NYC on 5th ave. I was 12 and it cost $21.00. The 3005 SBB Croc was $50 at the time.

I never got one of those illusive babies. Peter. Cool

I believe you but in The Netherlands large numbers of people including myself believe strongly that the introduction of the Euro in 2001 has caused prices to skyrocket in general.
And i know the good old days (were they that good?) will never return,i just mentioned the catalogue prices for sentimental reasons.
When i was a boy of 15 in 1970,i simply could not afford a Marklin locomotive costing some 50 Dutch guilders, and now as a man of 62,i cannot afford a Marklin locomotive of some 400 Euros, nothing has changed really.
This is what economists call "Scarcity of resources",there is never enough money to fulfill all your dreams.

Hi,

I just checked the prices for the Netherlands:

In the 15 years between 1988 (hfl 3.80) and 2003 (EUR 2.50) the price for a 2200 straight track was increased by 44.9 %. Between 2003 and 2018 the price was increased by 47.6%. I don't see the rocket. But between 1973 (hfl 1.50 for 2100) and 1988 (also 15 years) the price was increased by 153%.

You dont see the rocket but we in The Netherlands do,we live here, and we need more than a Marklin train in a days time.

Cool

In 1969, when I was 9 years old, I got 5,- Danish Kroner ( 2/3 of an EURO ) a week.

It took 24 weeks to save enough money to buy my first 3067 DSB NOHAB.

I know how it feels.
The blue NS 1200 was staring at me from the catalogues year after year.
So was the Santa Fe F7,and many others.
The most valuable Christmas gift i got was the 4921 Heizolwagen, and it came totally unexpected,in a world of poverty.
I sold it and bought it again, for nostalgic reasons.
By now i have catched in on the hardship of those days, but i will never forget where i came from.
Marklin in a nutshell for me.

Hi,

And like all international customers you had to pay an export - price. The German customer paid DM 45.00 for a 3067 that year, you had to pay the equivalent of ~DM 63.00 (1 DM= DKK 1.89).

Regards

Markus
