Hello.
Can I reset a loco to its default settings without a use of a MS or any other steering stuff? Friend just got a loco but her channel was changed and we don't know into which one. Off course we can search channel after channel but we want to avoid this. Loco is BR101.
Thanks

Hallo Hics
To reset a Märklin digital loco (MFX) you need a CS2 or CS3 (With MS2, I am not sure.). For a FX decoder loco , setting CV8 to value 8 will reset it. IMO there is no other way to reset a digital loco to factory settings. Cheers
Jean

Well, mfx looks easy because it will communicate itself with a cs. Originally Posted by: JohnjeanB IMO there is no other way to reset a digital loco to factory settings. Soo looks like he has to search channel after channel?

Yes, alternately, depending on the digital control unit your friend has, there may be a quick search (automatic address recognition process like on on the CS2) Cheers Jean |

Most decoders allow setting a new address or resetting the decoder without knowing the current address (some Uhlenschrott decoders are an exception to the rule). Are we talking about a Märklin loco? H0 gauge? |

If you have an ESU Lokprogrammer, you can scan the decoder and it will provide the address for quite a few decoders. I am not sure if the Maerklin MS or CS have an equivalent function.
Some modellers place a little sticker on the underside of the lok with the digital address on it. Others might put a sticker on the box or in the instructions that can be cross referenced when required. Personally, I try to find a way to make the digital ID connected to the road number of the lok. For example, my 3638 Ae 6/6 with road number 11414 has digital address 14. My 37347 Re 420 LION has the address 20 and so on... This association makes it easier to remember the "call sign" for each lok.
Regards
Mike C

Older Piko locos without DCC (AnDi decoder) can be a problem - but they have a reset pin on the decoder. Originally Posted by: Hics but if it's marklin how can you do it? For programmable FX locos: With the MS2, register the loco as "MM programmable" with any address (address must not be the correct address), then change the address. The new address will be written to the loco and the loco will now respond. Now you can also invoke Reset for the loco. With the MS2, register the loco as "MM programmable" with the default address (address from the manual), then reset the loco. Loco will now have the default address and should respond. |

If it is a Piko than it cannot have gotten the mfx format. A Märklin mfx loco has to be just deleted from the "driving range" (not the database inside) and then put it on the tracks back again. It does register by itself. It does not care about the digital address. It is always registering at a free address. That is the advantage of mfx: an automatically digital address management system. You do not have to know the digital address any longer. This management system is the reason why you do not need a special programming track for a mfx loco any longer. Because, if you program a loco for a digital address on your regular layout, all your other locos standing at the same time on this layout, will be programmed with the same digital address too. Then they all will start runnning at the same time too.

But M4 is mfx. But it seems they call it "mfx" since 2018. And they announce up to 44 controllable functions per loco (but with DCC only, not with the obsolete mfx protocol). Roco and Zimo now also use the name "mfx". Roco started selling mfx locos years ago. |

guys. stop arguing. I only know it's piko for marklin and it's not working. I told him to search for address. I just thought it might be easier to reset decoder to default settings somehow.
