“Management” has decreed (and for a change I agree) that my layout needs to be relocated for the third time in as many years.

I currently run a layout which is a combination of c & K track and I have decided that the new location will be a relatively modest c track only affair and plans are advanced.

This leaves me what I believe to be a “vast” quantity of used K track, its vintage is everything from one to thirty years old. Some things are in near new condition others have been used in many layout changes with the resulting bent fish plates etc. Nothing has ever been painted or ballasted but in general the condition is what I would call average or “play worn”

So, I am trying to work out what to do with things:

I am an ebay buyer but never a seller. I do not believe I have the patience to list & describe everything then pack and post, mess around with paypal then deal with the mumbles grumbles moans groans and refunds. If I listed everything and tried to put a massive job lot auction I risk getting fifty quid for the lot.

In the UK Marklin is relatively “unknown” so the thought of paying quite a lot of money for a table at a swap meet is not likely to be useful. Similarly freezing one’s nuts of at a car boot sale is likely be lucky to break even.

The guys that take glossy full-page page adverts in Continental modeller to attract our widows when we are gone do not seem very interested in track only – they make their money from the loks and rolling stock and finding buried treasure amongst the crap.

The “old fashioned” auction houses are a possibility.

So, anyone got any ideas or experience on this kind of thing. I am dreaming of a little genie who will appear in a cloud of smoke offer me loads of money peel off the Wonga, load it in his car and disappear.

Despite your initial sceptisism, I would say Ebay.
World-wide exposure, and you might fetch good prices from overseas costumers, if you can find a decent shipping-rate.
Sell it over a longer time, at a relaxed pace, so as to not get burried in a back-log of grumbles and refunds, as you say...

Also, there is no reason for why not to try with a mega-lot; Just set a minium price!

PS: If everything else fails, then you can send it to me free of charge, and I will be happy to take it off your hands. (Some Liquid Helium-trade in Big Bang Theroy comes to mind...)

You could try contacting Geoff at Contikits. He does have a list of used and new Maerklin on his website. He may make you an offer for the used track.
You could also check with Worthpoint or similar auction house if you wanted to try to sell the track in block.

Regards

Thanks for the replies

I have spent some time doing a list of items and included some things that are not purely track.

I have sent it off to a couple of likely contenders and to Contikits as suggested

Apologies if the expression "Wonga" confused, as a kid that was a roll of banknotes in Cockney slang. Of course now it is one of those dreadful payday loan crooks

Model rail stock list 2.xlsx (11kb) downloaded 72 time(s).

This is my "for sale" stock list - I have added more than just track

Ideally I should like to sell the lot as one or quite substantial "lots", I dont think I can be coping with " can I have one uncoupler for a fiver posted to Greenland"

Offers are invited by PM

Well then , during the week I received an offer from Yorkshires largest well known model rail emporium from whom I have previously purchased a very brittle c track 3 way turnout. They offered eight hundred pounds, it did not worry me that they called me Mr Pond so I went looking for a big box. Got back to the computer to find another frantic email - Oh shit ignore our last email we sent it to you by mistake! I think I'll post them an uncoupler just so they can see what they are missing.

After all k track uncouplers do seem to be very moderately priced:

So my whole collection will surely make me a millionaire!!
