I will be on a quick jaunt through Hamburg, Berlin, Hannover and,
possibly, Bremen next week. My first (and only) wife is busy with
trip planners, but I am hoping that members of this Forum could
give me a couple of pointers as to where/what to go/see in those
cities. My interests are, primarily, in Marklin/MRR and in food/drink[:I],
but suggestions/recommendations in other areas (what else is there left?biggrin)
will be accepted with gratitude and appreciation.

Mike:

Hamburg: Of course, Miniatur Wunderland. Go to the Baumwall station on the U-Bahn and it is a short walk. There is also supposed to be a good Spur 1 exhibit at the Hamburg History Museum near Landungsbrucken. Go to Landungsbrucken for a Bakfish sandwich along the Elbe. A number of good eateries along the river. If you get to Altona, there is a nice little gasthaus across from the Bahnhof...Eckhardt's, I believe. Good food and a cozy German atmosphere. I haunted that place regularly in the evening..it was right across the street from my hotel. If your wife is with you, you may not want to visit the dives on the Reeperbahn, but then again...I was with my son, his wife, and the grandkids so we didn't partake of those pleasures. (As the t-shirts you see all over Hamburg proclaim "Good Girls go to Heaven, Bad Girls go to Hamburg") Smile

We spent a day in Hannover. Didn't do any railroad stuff or dining there, but if you are interested in a city tour, go to the Tourist Info office across from the Bahnhof and pick up a Red Line guide book. There is a red line on the sidewalk throughout the altstadt that you follow and the numbers on the walk correspond to the explanations in the guidebook. The inclined elevator to the top of the Rathaus is an interesting trip, too.

In Berlin, definitely go to Loxx off the Ku'Damm. Also the Deutche Tecknik museum is worth a visit. It is in the old Bw for the Anhalter Bahnhof. We also visited the ruins of the Anhalter Bahnhof...interesting. If you walk out behind it and past the Sports building, you'll find the old station platforms still there. The new Hauptbahnhof is now open. It was under construction when I was there in December. It is worth a look-see. Take some pictures for me if you go. We were there during Christkindlemarkt time so we ate most of our meals at stands in the markt.

I'll try to recall some web links for you and pass them on.

Palle and Per,

I am traveling with my wife and daughter and
I figure we'll be in town on Tuesday-Wednesday
(November 7&8), with Tuesday being most likely -
our travels are always very dynamic in natureSmile
We also plan to visit Odense, Frederiksborg Slot
and Roskild.

I will give you my mobile phone number and if we
can meet - that would be fantastic! Regardless,
I'll be happy to get any advise from you.

Mike
P.S. Is it snowing yetconfused

If you have some time when you are in Hamburg, consider a trip in the "mollibahn": it is a narrow gauge line from Bad Doberan (not far from hamburh) with regular steam service! Here is the link:

Hi Mike,

Pietro is right, this train is worth a ride.
But it will take you about 3hrs on the train from Hamburg to Bad Doberan and another 3hrs back to Hamburgr, even if it does not look to be too far away from each other on a map.

I only got the chance to visit one when I was there, and that was the one near the Altona Bhf. (Modellbahn Altona Dipl. Ing. Uwe Draabe, 22767 Hamburg, Ehrenbergstr. 72)

They were very nice, helpful and friendly, plus had pretty good stockage.

Too bad your visit is now. If only about a week later, you could have visited the first Märklin shop-in-shop in Denmark. 600 square meters with nothing but model trains [:p]

Wow, I'd feel there like a baby in a candy store![:p][:p]
Now, shop-in-shop is just that - a part of a store devoted to
M* gear, right? So, is the whole store now closed, or just s-in-s
part not ready? Which place is it, anyway?

Yes, it is a dedicated M* section inside the real shop. They have not moved to the new location yet, but does so mid november. If your FD allows it (or if you don't tell her biggrin ), you can visit their old shop, which is quite a bit smaller, but has a lot of stuff anyway:

Hi All,

Just got back from wonderful trip. People were warm, beer was cold,
trains were real, seafood was as fresh as can be and the weather...
did I mention about the beer?biggrin.

Actually, we drove [:I]. Nice diesel Audi A3 with 6 speed, on which we
covered some 1,500 km (!). Hamburg-Lubeck-Copenhagen-Helsingor-Fredensborg-Roskilde-Flansburg-Schleswig-

I took a ton of pictures and here are few of them:
