Hope someone can help. As the nights draw in thoughts must go toward lighting. The track (analogue) is festooned with turnout lights and quite a lot of leds which sort of look out of place but hey, they are cheap...

I only have one older lit coach with just two bulbs and this is what I would like to repeat. (I'm referring to the 1975 catalogue and all my coaches are tinplate)

The lit coach I have is 346/3 and would appear to have two 7077 and a small pick up without bulb, which looks more like 7074 without a bulb and not 7198. I don't think this amounts to set 7322 which looks as if it is for use with diffusers.

So, the question is, what am I looking for? 7077 is pretty straightforward but for these older, shorter coaches can I use pickup 7198?

Or is there an easier way to do this?

I think you are looking at different periods in accessories:

346 coaches are from the 50s where different lighting was available. The lighting references you mention are for later coaches hence the difference between what you see in the catalogue and on your coach.

7198 + 7077 would be for 24cm tin plate coaches of the 4xxx series

For earlier coaches, you need the 7075 (or 384/21) pickup shoe which you can connect to 7077 lighting.

Thanks, this is really helpful. I can see that 7077 is easily available (at a price) as is 7198. 7075 is rarer being older. I need to confirm that 7198 is fine on 346 type coaches, from this it looks as if it is. Will report back.

To confirm, 7198 works fine on older 346 type coaches.

However, I have hit a snag! In my enthusiasm for seasonal lit coaches I did not take into account the havoc that the lighting pick ups would cause on a track controlled by 5146 type switch tracks. Not sure how to get round this. Any suggestions?

no easy solution here, apart from repositioning the track to allow for a full train length between the track and the controlled accessory, and ensuring that another train is not triggering something at the same time.
This can lead to a nightmarish domino effect across the layout

I have run into this same issue. A possible solution which wouldn't really work on any floor layouts, but if you plan to keep consists together you could create a wiring system to connect all of the lights to the locomotive's slider... and basically have a plug/socket going to each car rather than powering the cars individually.

Although tempting I'd rather avoid linking the cars together, this could become very fiddly, particularly under catenary.

I think I will look hard at the positioning of the track switches and see if I can move them to prevent mishaps. The part of the track in question is simple and has been laid out so that it can be left alone to operate in the background by itself. I prefer to run short trains using short carriages because the layout is small.

All good fun!
