I've just got my hands on a useful box of small M track bits and pieces. Amongst it all are half a dozen uncoupler tracks some marked either 3601 EK or 5112.

They look the same and I assume you will confirm that they are but...where does the different series numbering come from? Was there a 3xxx series M track before the advent of 5xxx series?

Ok so it is a real newbie question!

Hello Michael,
1957 Märklin changed their numbering system, loco SK 800 got the number 3007, tracks 36xx changed to 51xx / 52xx.
see and compare pics from catalog 1956 and 1957

Hi Michael,

Just two additions: The numbering system changed January, 1st 1957, but the D57 appeared in late - summer. So there are about two or three dozen of items which got a new number, but which don't appear in the 1957 catalogue. So for example the majority of the MODELLGLEIS - assortment or the TT 800. Many products with the old number in the mould lost that number much later. For example the crane-car 4611 on which was written "315/2" until 1969/70. But there is also at least one product wearing it's old number until today. If you order a 74997 today you can still read "3601EKL" on the socket.
