It's hard to tell, but I read the text on the loc as "Ontario Northland" and not "Ontario Northern".
Not a big deal maybe, I just remember the Northlander as something specific...

Actually, the email came from Marklin North America.

The livery depicted is really for Ontario Northland, home of the famous Ontario Northlander.
From what I recall, Ontario Northland did not use EMD F7's.
They purchased GMD FP7's built in Canada.
Much like equating the Prussian G12 with the Baden G12.

Hopefully Marklin doesn't just rebadge they're antiquated F7's.

Thanks, Ralph

The locomotive #2000 does look like the Maerklin toy model.
http://www.railpictures.net/photo/470777/
http://www.railpictures.net/photo/178532/
The locomotive does not seem to have the same roof mountings as the other ones
http://www.railpictures.net/photo/238058/

I would have preferred to see a CN Super Continental or CP Canadian for a Canadian model.
Ontario Northland might be of interest to some because of the ex-TEE train.

I guess that this and other models will probably be in the Export Models brochure when it comes out

ON did indeed have FP-7's. Seems like a strange choice by Marklin.

An F7 with markings of an FP7, that is much like a 216 with marking of a 218 or a 110 with markings of a 140. Or like an 03 with markings of an 03.10. Or a 120.1 with markings of a 120.0.
That's Märklin as we know it. Some are happy about the new livery, some are upset about the compromises.
Regards
Tom

I agree that the FP7 versus F7 mash-up is awkward, but besides: What is wrong with the F7 that it provokes wrath?

Agreed, they must be banking on the fact that anything badged "northlander" by Marklin has been a gold mine for the company since day 1. Canadian Pacific with with aluminum cars to match would have been a much better choice:

Also, still B unit possibilities for the DRG 3062, SP 3129, and others...

The deal breaker for me is, that FP7 is 4ft (1.2 m) longer than F7. That's hard to cover with make-up.
I'm putting this into same category with the white NYC korokodil.

Or, maybe I'm just a nitpicker,

I am hopeful that a CP Canadian will be produced by Marklin in the near future. One by one, Marklin has been picking off the low hanging fruit in optimizing the use of its tooling for the Budd streamliner passenger cars. First was the Western Pacific San Francisco Zephyr, second the Wabash Blue Bird, third the Santa Fe Super Chief, and most recently, the Pennsylvania Congressional. I believe that pretty much leaves the Canadian as one of the originally equipped Budd streamliners not yet produced. Perhaps someone at Marklin follows this forum and the message gets carried up the chain. Otherwise, we should start lobbying for a Canadian. It would sell like hot cakes with Canadian maple syrup on top. Regards, Chris

I am going to take the plunge. It doesn't bother me that the ON never owned F-7s. I am putting this offering in the "classic" Marklin category vs. their contemporary, true to scale offerings. Also, I have great memories of riding the ON Polar Bear Express to Moosonee as a kid. Chris

Well, I started buying Märklin's so-called limited edition models in the 1990s, and virtually none of those items have kept their value except for a few rare freight cars there's still a demand for now. In future prices will slide even further as the MRR market keeps shrinking slowly but steadily. In the next economic recession, which is bound to come within the next 10 years or so, demand for MRR items will collapse and some manufacturers will go bust.

What matters to each one of us, though, is that we really enjoy the stuff we buy, independently of its value. The new Northlander locomotive looks looks very nice and was actually a good idea in my opinion, despite what some detractors say about it not being prototypical, so enjoy it. Smile

Best regards,
Mark
Best regards, Mark

I like Märklin items produced in the 1960s or early '70s, but also digital locos & current rolling stock.

Confused

What is the point?

If you want to do an investment, why not buy some stocks instead?

I would classify buying a Marklin loco as an investment at VERY HIGH risk.

Buying the same loco and PLAYING with it is a much better way of spending one's money.

My 2 cents' worth, of course. BigGrin

Wont they fall off the track like that?

They are almost the same, the couplings are different of course, the old one has that thing on top, probably something to do with it pulling that TEE train.

Lol. The forum turned the picture upside down when I uploaded it. :-(

The light blue and dark blue colors are inverted on the 39623.

There are no extras included with the 39623; ie. no snowplows but there's new radio chatter.

Good Morning,

Listed below are some historical informational links on the Ontario Northlands FP-7’s.

I decided to create these so that I can be of service to our marklin-users.net members.

As the author of “The Northlander TEE Trainset” article in the July/August 1999 issue of CANADIAN RAILWAY MODELLER please see;

Ontario Northlands Northlander. A special thanks to Rob Godly for keeping this link alive!

http://www.uwyo.edu/rgodby/trains/northlander.htm

In the article you will find a link for the FP-7's. If you do not want to read it in the article the link is below;

http://www.uwyo.edu/rgodby/trains/northfp7s.htm

The Hamilton Spectator (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada)

Published an article “All aboard the history train” by Tim Miller which is very informative concerning Canadian and US railroads.

I have found Joes Modellbahnladen prices to be somewhat high for end of run items, as though he is attempting to price gouge those who are chasing after 'must have' items.

I'm guessing that Mr Diez managed to secure a few of this "Made for North America" model, either through the factory or through Marklin USA.
If he bought it from Marklin USA/Walthers' he would have to factor the shipping costs back to Germany into his retail.

I don't see that this should be an issue at all.

I just received some Dutch limited production container cars. Maybe Marklin should officially realize that not all modellers who might be interested in such models live in the country where those models are released. The only Hupac Sgns container cars were part of the 47081 VOS Logistics set for Holland when the cars are Swiss. The "Samskip", "Geest", "Den Hartogh", "VandenBosch" and "RMI" containers can be found throughout Europe and not just in Holland and I'm sure that the ON Rail locomotive would appeal to any modeller or collector of F7s here or worldwide.

That said, enjoy your models and hope that when a limited model that is of interest to you comes out, that you will hear about it and you will find a dealer willing to ship it to you.

Regards
