Hello,
I purchased a Märklin snow plow 49963, the red-brown one with sound and snow plow function.

UserPostedImage

However, it is well known, that the motor runs very fast and very loud. Furthermore, the motor starts immediatly together with the sound with full speed. But I found an description, how to modify the decoder and the circuit to control the snow plow speed with the drive function of the digital controller.

Here i got the description from Hans-Günter Heiserholt:
http://www.web-hgh.de/p02_ma_26830_u.htm

And here are some pictures of my conversion and a demo video:

Here are some more pictures:

The small circuit board for the motor control is placed safely under the decoder board and behind the speaker:

I have one of these snowplows, but the technical German on that website is beyond me.. That said, it is still an awesome project.

Hello Adrian,
I may give You some more explanations, if You are interested to do the conversion:

1st You need some additional parts:
1 SMD Trim-pot 10 kOhm
1 SMD Trim-pot 500 kOhm
3 SMD Resistor 10 kOhm
1 SMD Elektrolytkondensator 10 µF /16V

With these parts, You have to build the following circuit:

UserPostedImage

I used a small perfboard with 4x6 solder points, the following picture shows a similar version with a stripboard:

Pictures with friendly permission by Hans-Günter Heiserholt

2nd You have to unsolder Pin 3 and Pin 4 of the 701.22 Decoder chip.
This may be the most risky action. Hans-Günter recommended to use a needle / pin. Put the needle under the Pin 3 from the side, then heat the Pin 3 with the soldering iron and lift the pin from the board carefully! Then do the same for Pin 4.

Take care that the Pin 3 and Pin 4 will not brake off. We need them!

3rd Connect thin litz wire to the Pins [2, 3, 4, 9, 19, 28]
The litz wire should be at least 10 cm. It is helpful to use 6 different-coloured litz wire. The Pins 2, 9, 19 and 28 must not be unsoldered like Pin 3 and Pin4. You can solder the litz wire directly to the Decoder Pins.

Be carefull, dont use too much solder to avoid shortcuts between the Decoder Pins.

4th Unsolder the motor wires
The litz wire to the motor can be unsoldered from the decoder board. All other wires remain where they are.

5th Solder the new litz wires
Solder the 6 litz wires from the decoder chip and the 2 wires from the motor to the new circuit board and place the circuit board as shown in my example. Take care that there is no contact from the circuit board to the case!

  • The small cermet potentiometer enable to adjust the start/brake delay and the maximum speed.
  • F1 does start sound and smoke unit, but not the motion!
  • The snow pow wheel will be controlled with the rotary button of Your MS2/CS2/CS3, not with a function button!
  • The same for the rotational direction, it is changed with the rotary button, too.

Regards,
Moritz

Hello Mortiz

Oh now that you have written this for me, it makes much more sense and the project now seems to be within my reach..

Added to the project list.. Pin 3 an 4 seems to be the most dangerous part. So at this point it looks like we are isolating the IC pins 3 and 4 from the original circuit and redirecting the signals of those pins to the new board..

Looks doable.. A project for the Easter Break I think.

Thank you for the clear instructions.

Hi Moritz, nice project you have done with the rotary snow plow.

I think your new functions come to place when the plow are standing still/start up procedure and not moving on the track ??

I am not an expert but information's tells me that the rotary plow run in full speed so the snow do not get packet in the rotary casing.

It is a awesome project, as your other projects.ThumpUp

Anyway this plow do a nice impression on any layout, original or not. Here is mine ØBB version start from 4,37.

Have fun.BigGrin

Hello Torstein,
a great video You showed us!

Yes, I think the bucket wheel looks much better, when it starts slowly and also runs out slowly and not as abrupt as it does in the standard configuration from Märklin. And furthermore, the motor makes less noise, when You choose a slower speed. It is still fast enough.

Look here:

The rotational speed is not really so high, otherwise the tangential velocity on the wheel ends would be much too high.

As You can read here (http://www.dampflokmuseum.de/fileadmin/content/default/Museum/Exponate/Sonstige/730-033-DRE/schneeschleuder.pdf), the maximum rotational speed was limited to 160U/min!
