If you have a mixed system, digital loco control via a MS2 and trackbox, analog turnout control via a transformer, can the negative or 'earth' wire of both circuits be common? Electrically it seems obviously yes, but I never know for sure with electronics.

Hi!

You can have a common ground (which is neither "negative" nor "earth").
In a Märklin layout you would normally use the brown wire as a common ground.

With Mobile Stations and Central Stations, do not make the transformer that feeds the station part of the common ground. Better do not connect anything else to the transformer that feeds the MS/CS.

Agree with H0.

When things are ideal, its not an issue, but its the "how are things handled" when there is a non-deal situation, such as an accidental bridge from the other AC signal to the digital track, or a short, those non-normal situations can be problems for the electronics of the digital side.
