Hello! I would eventually like to build the layout "Tribsach, Mitten im Schwarzwald" which is on pages 47-50 of the Gleisplanbuch (Sorry I don't have a scanner but hopefully somebody here will have the book to refer to).

Since I'm trying to save money, and I want to have a layout which combines all the epochs, I would only like to install catenary for the two upper tracks so I will have something like an electrified mainline.
This will of course be very difficult to do as the raised pantographs will probably collide with the tunnel openings. So, do you have any ideas on how to vary the trackplan so that this can be done?

Hi Peter,

The trick is to have run on/run off sections inside the tunnels for the pantographs to "engage" the catenary.

The other option is to restrict the operation of electric locomotives only to where there is catenary.

Peter, as John says you can have run on / run off sections inside your tunnels. You can use a piece of curved wood or wire for this purpose. Noch do some tunnel mouths that are wide enough for a double track mainline with catenary. I've got the book you refer to so will take a look at the plan.

Here's an example of what we mean by a run on / run off section - the pantographs run in the hidden areas fully extended, with no overhead wire present.

If Ron passes this way, he has a piccy of run on/off that he did on his layout mate.

Never seen it down like that Bigdaddynz. Cool

I think Ron uses a full 7019 piece of catenary on a slight angle, this picture was lifted from a German language video I have of a large layout being built. I think Huib Maaskant uses a similar method to this, but with a piece of wire instead of wood.

BTW, I had a look at the track plan layout, it is basically on 2 levels, in a sort of figure 8 setup, with an underground storage area, 3m x 1.4m. Quite a good plan with lots of possibilities.

Hi thanks everyone for the advice. Bigdaddynz, basically its the two tracks running on the upper level of the plan that I would like to use catenary with. The run on/off idea is what I was already considering but wouldn't an already extended pantograph collide with any tunnel portal anyway?
And, for that matter, are all models with extended pantographs the same height anyway?
