So I ran my 8891 continuously for 30 minutes and then when I ran it again it twitched and only went backwards.
The loco is not moving forwards, but the motor runs both ways.
I disassembled the loco, removed the motor and discovered that the drive shaft was worn out.
I checked for spare parts at http://www.maerklin.de/ but the loco 8891 is not manufactured anymore and it seems like they dont have any spareparts for it in stock either.
Any suggestions how to find a new drive shaft or at least similar cogwheel ? The motor is removed. The driveshaft is worn out.

I keep on hearing good things about E-bay.de - too bad I don't read German and Google only helps so far. Out of curiosity, what is it about the drive shaft that led you to conclude it's worn out? The picture does not help me. Thanks. |

Did the new shaft solve the problem?
(I only see that the new shaft looks sharp, but not that the old one is worn out. Sorry.) |

Hi Baggio,
Look at the worm-gear. No tooth any more.

All five rounds originally look the same. On the worn drive the tooth is much smaller and much wider in the middle. Loco stopped because the cog-wheel no longer made contact. The worm is like a screw, a cylinder screw - when it is new. |

Why did it wear out so quickly after 30 mins? Must be some other issue there? Heavy friction on the gears? Only that worm gear worn out, how about the other gears? Puzzling....

Hi,
It was not worn in 30 minutes but in several years. It was just the last 30 min run which took the last 1/100 mm which decides between mesh and no - mesh.

Puzzling.... I understood he ran it in only one direction for 30 minutes. It was when he changed direction that he discovered it wouldn't run that way. Thi sis probably the reason it was sold to him, without being told it is faulty.

Finally I received my new drive shaft. Total cost with shipping 12.85 EUR. Quite a lot for such a small part. It was not very difficult to change the drive shaft. Now the old loco runs as usual again. My video of the change of the driveshaft. (No english)

In another modelrailway forum, someone was surprised to see that I didnt lubricate the cogwheel. I dont do that anymore, because I run my locos quite rarely and I am afriad of that horrible hardened oil syndrome. Yes, what will I do with that worn out drive shaft ? as you wrote maybe it could be a load for a flat car.
