Hi all,

Recently we visited our son, who is doing an internship in Xi'an, China. We had intended to fly to Beijing, take an overnight train to Xi'an, and on the way back travel on a high-speed train to Beijing, then fly home. Unfortunately, the overnight train was not to be. Our flight to Beijing was changed by the airline due to a delay in the feeding flight, so we arrived in Beijing 10 hours late, at about the time the overnight train was leaving. As the ticket prices for trains to Xi'an had skyrocketed in the meantime, we then flew to Xi'an instead of taking a train.

The pictures (click for large versions) below are from our Xi'an–Beijing trip on train G88, which went as planned.
From our hotel, it was a short walk to the metro station at the Bell Tower, where we took the subway to Xi'an North Station (fare: 3 yuan). There we picked up the tickets we had booked online before we left for China, and entered the enormous waiting area. About 30 minutes before train departure, we then proceeded to ticket check and platform.

The train accelerated fairly quietly, and the ride was very smooth; even at top speed our drink bottles stood steady as a rock. Advantage of train travel: the views of course, even when somewhat limited due to air quality.

Speed

Big station, nice-looking train (grainy picture resulted from failure to change the shutter speed from 1/2000th [used at speed] to something appropriate for stationary position).

The last picture also shows a problem we saw frequently: fairly new buildings with deteriorating details (broken tiles, crumbling plaster, etc.)
