Ok, next question. Would I have to remotor my 3005 to convert it to digital? Delta capabilities is all I really need. If, not which decoder do I need, and is that hard to do yourself.

Thanks!

Bill you have 3 basic options. Install a Lokpilot decoder and use the existing motor (no better driving characteristics than at present).

As above, but replacing the existing motor coil with a permanent magnet (better driving characteristics)

Go for a complete decoder / Hi Efficiency motor upgrade (the best driving characteristics)

Here's a web page showing how to upgrade a 3005 with a Marklin 60923 upgrade kit. Keep in mind that the 3005 has a Small Flat Commutor Motor (SFCM).

Hi Bill,
I agree with the previous answer, just wanted to add a comment.
Upgrading the motor to 5 pole/high efficiency is only a small additional percentage to the cost of a digital conversion.
Simply grafting a new decoder where the inversion relay used to be will practically always produce inferior results (often less than analog)
To do it right in any case, one should disassemble the motor anyway, to clean up and check the mechanism (especially the commutator and the gears)
Might as well then reassemble with (better) new parts and with a squeaky clean set of gears!.
There is a world of difference in performance.
When I was running a Marklin Service Station, I performed hundreds and hundreds conversions of Marklin loks and I can assure you out of my own (long) history it is worth the extra effort!
Just my two cents

Hi all,

Based on my conversion experience (> 100) I can fully agree with Jacques statement, it is well worth the effort and money to do a full conversion.

It sounds like you have already decided to go with a high efficiency motor (Great!!!). I have a former Delta lok that was converted to digital without a motor upgrade. It performs so badly that I hardly ever run it. It is on my list to do another upgrade with a high efficiency kit and a LS 3.5!

I've chosen not to convert mine. It's such an old classic that it seems right to leave it in original condition.

Having said that, if I were going to convert it, I would probably use a Lokpilot and Hamo magnet. I've had very good results from that combination without the extra expense of the 60923, which triples the price of the conversion for very little gain.

As usually, I agree with Ray.

If the locomotive has been taken care of, condition of rotor and gears will be more that acceptable. In any case, usually, only a revision and cleaning is required. Fitting a Hamo magnet and a LoPi (or suitable UHL decoder) will bring not as good performance as a complete conversion kit (+new gears)...but almost...and at a quarter price.

Best regards.

Hi Ray and all,
The best results I have had in converting Marklin locos was using Marklin 5 poles upgrades with other brand decoders.
Of all the best of the best was obtained with Zimo decoders, followed closely by ESU products.
The key here is to take the time to understand how to fine tune the decoder's motors speed/load regulation parameters.
Things may have changed of course, since my last major conversion run dates back to 2005...

Hi Jacques,

Never tried the Zimo decoders. Do they do a MM version?

I have a couple of conversions using LP2 decoders which are OK, but not brilliant. My recent conversions with LP3 are almost indistinguishable from the 6090x conversions performance wise.

Hello obxbill.

I have converted a Primex 33005, which is quite identical with the 3005.

I used the 60903 (same as 60923 but without the mfx decoder)
See my website http://www.saebonet.com/Svein/Tog/Sites/D/33005.htm if you like some more details.

Thanks for the added info! Seems like I have a few options. I'm gonna be contacting a guy in Va. next week about doing the conversion. Thanks to you all I'll have a clue what I'm talking about when I do. :)

Yes Ray, Zimo most certainly produce MM decoders, usually with DCC. They even have decoders with a 21pin interface that can be used with original C-Sine motors. There are sound versions available too. Be warned, they are not cheap!

Zimo is indeed not "cheap" if that means "requires some dough"
But so does a Porsche or a Ferrari.
The excitment is however in proportion.
I used to sell Zimo (not anymore, I'm retired) and they truly reminded me of Porsche in the 1960's...: small with a brilliant future because they do not compromise on performance and reliability.
Now you know why I like them...
Simple taste, only the best!biggrinbiggrinCool
With that kind of "angle", ESU would then be a Mercedes...and Uhlenbrock an Audi!wink

Hi Lutz,
You are correct, I never tried programming Zimos with a 6021!!winkwink.(I only "sound" stupid from time to timebiggrinbiggrin)
The 6021 has been "retired" to greener pastures for many years now...when I discovered the multiple benefits of truly universal open systems.

Well, Jacques, I still value the simplicity and relability of my 6021, so it looks like I'll have to pass on the Zimo's.

Shouldn't a "truly universal open system" support Marklin decoders? Oh, sorry they're only "truly universal" if you happen to prefer DCC!.

Hello, you can put it anywhere, mostly I use the little brass tabs to sold the wire and then hold it with one of the motor shield screw
Not at home right now, but i have found this old picture on my gallery, it shows the mentioned tab fixed on the upper right screw of the motorshield
