Hi all
I found my old Märklin and brought it back from storage and I found a 6631 transformer in the box. For a while I have been thinking about getting a transformer to run analogue stuff and I was looking at the 66470 "Safety transformer" to do the job. I do not want to get into using old potentially unsafe metal transformers.
Now I was wondering: Does the 6631 (which seems to be of another type than the old metal transformers) have the same safety features as the 66470? Or should I give it up and use the 66470 instead? |

Hi, Søren,
The latest transformers have protection against reverse transformation. That's good for scenarios with two or more transformers.
Recent transformers (6646, 6647, 66470) have a lower reversing voltage than the older "metal transformers" and the older "plastic transformers" and the overload protection switches off very quickly. Both features can help to protect digital locos used on analogue layouts. |

Oh okay. So your advise is to go for the 66470 and stay out of potential trouble? I cannot really be sure that I would never use it to test how a digital loco might perform on an analogue layout. |

I can only speak for myself: I'd only use transformers that are the smallest risk for my digital locos - 6647 or newer. Yes, I try to stay out of (potential) trouble.
This is irrelevant for people that only have analogue locos. For those the older transformers with the higher reversing voltages may even work better. |
