Speed of these trains ("Lint"?) can easily reach 100 km/h and over. A frontal crash means equivalent to a 200 km/h crash against a concrete wall. Victims were obviously seated in the front coaches, not in the back. These socalled "light" trains are in fact one big crash absorber,as such saving the lives of the people in the back.
12 (twelve) people dead this morning.

It's not very far from my mother's family's home town of Matera. By the single track line it was probably human error? Peter

One train was a private FT Stadler Flirt (3 Unit?) ETR 341 trainset http://www.railfaneurope...vate/Ft/FT_ETR341_01.jpgand the other one was a FT ELT 200 trainset (3-Unit) https://upload.wikimedia...Elettrotreno_ELT_200.jpg The Flirt coach seems to have pretty much disintegrated on impact, with the other trainset absorbing the impact with more success. I guess it may still have had a traditional steel body which fared better than the lighter Flirt design. It is reported that one of the two trains departed from the last stop in advance of it's signal. Regards Mike C

Total 23 people dead as per latest count.
Get the impression that there is a slight curve in the track, perhaps the drivers did not see eachother till the very last moment. |

Even if both trains travelling at speed put on their brakes the moment they spotted each other, the chance that the trains could stop before impact is very small. Regards Mike C

The BBC report also mentions 4 coaches for each train. http://www.20min.ch/dias...dbcac11a2b24f18d0537.jpgIt is not clear if the Stadler was an ETR 341 or ETR 342, but it is mentioned on several sites that the trainsets have 4 units, meaning that half of the trainset disintegrated on impact. The ELT 200 Coradia (LINT) trainsets came in 3 and 4 unit versions. This seems to have been a 3 coach composition. If you look at the aerial shot, you can see the motor unit, still largely intact, having shifted off the rails due to the impact and the two trailing units, still on the track. After viewing this video , I concede that the photo posted at 20min.ch looks more like the 4 coach variant of the Coradia. The markings on the front correspond to the the image of the one involved in the accident. That would seem to indicate that the leading coach of the Coradia was also disintegrated. Regards Mike C

My understanding is that the impact took place at a curve and there was no time to break.
Apparently, communications about an oncoming train is normally done there by telephone.
Both trains sharing one rail, facing each other.
An incredibly sad event that was so easily avoidable. |

According to Dutch press reports today, the regular trains from both directions were late,as such a third train was put into service and this may have caused confusion with the stationmaster, not realising there were 3 trains, not 2. Also,it says that money was provided for an advanced safety system but it was not confirmed this money was actually put to use. http://www.nu.nl/buitenl...italie-veroorzaakte.htmlAnd Italian press coverage: http://www.lastampa.it/2...q0i6sdYg4v6M/pagina.htmlSafety systems are nice to have but in Holland they do not stop trains at slow speed. In particular for departing trains from stations this may be the black hole in the system. Two years ago a local train departed from a suburbian station near Amsterdam, the driver ignoring a red signal, she ran frontal into an intercity from the opposite direction, one person killed, several wounded, intercity train a total loss. |

Hi everybody
The communication by telephone between 2 stations in 2016 is shameful.
Furthermore, if I understood well on RDI Canada, Italy would have received from the EU more than 150 million euros for the modernization of the railroad line.
Well. where is money ???
