A turnout motor 7549 stopped working in one direction (fixed to a "new type" 2260 point) .Checked wiring to K83 decoder then onto a 6040 keyboard. Removed point motor and used a simple switch from transformer yellow brown and it worked perfectly. Put it back and still working only one way. Lots of trial and error combinations removed K83 decoder from under the board and after a jiggle of the turnout motor and a squirt of contact cleaner we appear to be working again in the original k83/6040 position although I am not convinced the matter is over.

But now to the real problem, in amongst my trial and error diagnostics I got out of the parts box a nearly new Viessmann 5211 decoder that had been used for only a short time on my old layout. Changed the switches (which are nicely on the outside on this decoder) to the correct address of the K83 that I thought was troublesome Plugged in the now working points motor and a red/brown power line and ..... nothing. Tried a few other combinations and I can get this Viessmann to do nothing yet go back to the original k83 and we are working again. Now I usually know and admit when I have done something foolish - plugged in the wrong plug when things are live etc but I am on this occasion not guilty M'lord. So I have in mind a little expansion project in the near future and the 5211 was part of that scheme. Any suggestions or am I again in the market for a new 5211 or 60831 decoder. Viessmann appear with the switches on the outside not to want you to look inside the box with glued and screwed connection.

As you said always switch off power first before changing plugs etc. on the decoderOhMyGod

I believe you can unscrew the cover from the decoder. I once fried a 5211 and when I looked at the print card I manage to see visually a fried diode. It was an easy and cheap fix to solder a new one in place.

So maybe have a look?

Hi,

Did you also plug the "E" line to "red" in your 5211 ? If not, it won't run.

Cheers

Thanks Fabrice - all now working

I owe you a beer

I had forgotten that and I had hid the german instruction sheet in amongst loads of other papers.

What would I do without this forum?
