I am trying to set up a first time Marklin layout with M track. I have a 3029 locomotive with a coupler that to me looks like a hammer. It will not couple with the cars I have. Is there a way to change this coupler? Does anyone know why these older locomotives were made this way? I notice newer ones have couplers compatible with my cars.
Second question - I am having trouble finding screws with a large enough head to hold down M track. I bought some off ebay but they fall right through the holes in the track. I know I could drill new holes but I'd rather not have to do that. I tried getting some at Home Depot, but they turned out to be too big and would interfere with the locomotive. I don't want to glue down the track. I will have to turn this layout on its side at times so the track has to be held down firmly. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I will deal with the screw issue first. You may have to get Marklin screws. They used to come in Boxes of, I think, 50 or 100. They were specially designed to hold the track, and not interfere with the slider. Likely they are metric, and probably hard to find in the U.S. I am not sure if they are still made. I got a box on eBay a few years ago.
As to the coupler, i have this model, but will have to look at it, to be sure. It should accept the Relex coupler, the old style Marklin coupler. Mine is fine with the new close coupler system as well as the older standard.
i will hopefully have some time in the train room this evening, and will check the parts number for the screws, and the coupler on the E10.
If you can put up a picture of the coupler that might help.

The coupler for 3039 is 21 484. I got the part number from an old 1984/1985 catalogue. I am not sure of the part number has changed. You might want to e mail your Marklin dealer to check for the new one. Mike Sorge at Westend Trains in Toronto is very good at figuring out what the modern exchange parts are. He is prompt at responding to e mails
I think you might see what it should look like if you google Marklin 3038, and look for the images.
As an aside, you may want to get the Marklin tool kit. It has the correct screwdrivers and other tools that make changing parts much easier. They also fit the track screws. It is 70900

From the description I think the coupler is not missing and the spare parts number for the coupler does not help.
Yes, the hook coupler looks like a hammer. It should couple with Märklin Relex couplers and Märklin close couplers (cars may have to be lifted to couple).
We haven't seen pictures of the cars that won't couple. They could be a different type, they could be badly bent out of shape, ... |

The cheapest Marklin locos (3000, 3029, 3078, 3087, and newer variants) all have these simple "hook" type couplers. They work perfectly only with Relex couplers. I find they rarely couple up to close couplers at the first attempt, and sometimes the wagon has to be lifted slightly as Tom points out.
Some sets that I own include a loco fitted with these hooks and wagons fitted with close couplers, which is frustrating if you want to couple and uncouple the loco remotely. In these cases I swap the close coupler on the front wagon with a relex type. |
