Good morning,
I just purchased a Marklin 37794 Thalys PBKA and while researching which add on cars to get I find out that Marklin also produced a Marklin 37791 Thalys PBKA.
Besides the product number and possibly year of manufacture is there a difference in the models?

Hi Michel,
From a decoder and sound prospective they appear the same. The only difference I can find is that 37794 is based on the 2012 THALYS while 37791 is based on the 2010 THALYS. Glancing at the photos they appear to be the same but there may have been some minor cosmetic change between 2010 and 2012.

Drive her slow over turnouts and you will have no trouble - go too fast and the wheels fall off. She is a very graceful lady. I have the earlier model and the later Tintin version - love them both, but they like to be treated like a lady. |

I don't have the Thalys. I only have the Lyria trainset. I thought that difference between the two models was that one 37791 (4431) was a Dutch (NS) owned trainset (2010) and the second 37794 (4303) was a Belgian (SNCB) owned unit (2012). I think that the third (Tintin) model is a SNCF trainset (2011?). 37791 37794 As far as I know, all of the Maerklin models are of the PBKA (Paris-Bruxelles-Koeln-Amsterdam) subseries and not from the earlier PBA (Paris-Bruxelles-Amsterdam) version. I believe that some of the intermediate cars may have differences depending on the year of the model, such as wifi or cellphone antennae and other modifications. The train coaches are also numbered to match the rest of the trainset, so getting the ones that correspond to the main unit is important, especially given that the consists belong to different companies. Mike C Hello Märklineers! I do like the Thalys very much. I have been tempted to get the Märklin model but a number of detracting comments on the forum have left me leary. In regards to the PBKA - We travelled on this Thalys from Bruxelles to Paris in 1998 :  I snapped this Thalys at Köln HBF in 2011 :   and this Thalys sped past us at Amsterdam Centraal in 2014 :  Regards, PJ

What I compared was the pages in Marklin's product database: 3779137794The model descriptions and features lists are identical. The prototype description for 37794 does mention that it is based in Brussels. |

Roland, Adrian, Mike and PJ,
Thank you very much for giving me a history lesson on the Thalys.
Whenever I go to my local Marklin dealer Westend Trains, I alway feel like a kid walking into I candy store! Only so much money and too much candy to select from, decisions, decisions?
While browsing the store I lay my eyes on the the infamous Marklin Thalys!
May I quote from PJ "I also have been tempted to get the Märklin model but a number of detracting comments on the forum have left me leery!" As I also read those negative posts about the train set and thought about not buying it but seeing the Thalys in person and up close. Well.....I just decided that's what I wanted!
So here I am the new owner of the Marklin 37794 Thalys PBKA!
Impressions so far;
Beautiful trains set, sound is very nice and the running quality is very good! I do find that the train with the sound turned off is noisy and not as quite as the Marklin NS ICE train that I have.
If anyone has more information please reply to this post.

According to Wikipedia, the DB funded a pair of the SNCB Trainsets (4321/4322). They are owned by DB, but I believe they are maintained and operated by SNCB. This page lists exactly which trainsets belong to which member company. Isn't the internet wonderful? Regards Mike C

Good Evening,
As a follow up to my purchase on Saturday of the Marklin 37794 Thylas PBKA set. I was able to find two of the three sets to complete the ten car train set. All that is left is to find Marklin 43444.
