Hello All,

I am about to purchase two loks which do not have extensive sounds built in:

Marklin 37851 (BR151)

Marklin 37436 (BR143)

If I wanted to expand their sound capabilities, what exactly do I need to install? ESU Loksound decoder? Or does that require ESU LokPilot? They do have mfx decoders so replacing seems like it would be a waste of a perfectly good decoder. I have tried searching but have not yet been able to confirm the answer to this question.

Thanks in advance,
Roland

Hi, Roland,

There is no easy answer.

LokPilot is without sound, LokSound is with sound.

Some Märklin decoders have amplified AUX3/4, some have unamplified AUX3/4. ESU decoders for 21MTC never have amplified AUX3/4.
Some locos do not use AUX3/4 and any decoder will fit. Some locos either require amplified AUX3/4 or unamplified AUX3/4.

With your 37436 it should not matter. With your 37851 check what AUX3 and AUX4 do and whether they are amplified - post a picture of the decoder if you don't know where to look.

There are two incompatible standards for 21MTC (NMRA and NEM) - and Märklin usually ignore both.
Regards
Tom

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the response. Are you saying LokSound = LokPilot+sound capabilities? No need to have both?

I will post pictures of the decoders once I receive the loks.

Thanks
Roland

Yep, Märklin and ESU sell decoders with or without sound - and there is no upgrade path to add sound later without replacing the original, mute decoder. I think it's the same with Zimo.
So you need a sound decoder - ESU LokSound or mSD or such.

With diesel locos you sometimes here the engine speed up before the loco starts moving - decoder and sound work together to achieve this.

Uhlenbrock sell decoders and sound modules, so you need both to get "music". I think this limits interaction between sound and movement.
