Is Marklin 3317 basically an newer updated version of the 3018 SNCF S3/6 loco? Since the color is different too, is it safe to assume that the 3317 is more prototypically correct? And finally, would it be easier to convert the 3317 to all digital w/sound that the 3083? Thanks! Chuck (3083 top pic, 3317 bottom pic)

The 3317 has a mode detailed chassis than the earlier loco. Note the brake gear for example. It also has the DCM motor instead of the old SFCM.
My only gripe with the 33xx locos is that they have the extra electronic circuit that has to be ripped out and re-wired, and the light bulbs are low voltage so must be replaced.
I generally prefer the 30xx or 31xx to the 33xx locos for conversion to digital, as there is less to replace, and I put up with the lights flashing a bit.
Some 33xx are delta locos, and these are the easiest to convert, in my opinion, as they already have a lot of the work done for you. |

Small C track layout, control by MS2, 100+ trains but run 4-5 at a time.

The 33xx locos (other than those that are delta) have an additional electronic circuit that works in conjunction with the electro-mechanical reversing unit to prevent the "jump" when reversing. These locos are very desirable for those who operate using analogue control because they have a smooth transition from forward to reverse and vice versa. The electronic circuit also controls the direction dependant lights but uses a lower voltage, so the light bulbs fitted are only 3V instead of the more usual 16V - 20V types. When I have convert these types to digital I have sometimes forgotten about the light bulbs being a lower voltage, leading to a very bright (and terminal) flash when I first power up the converted loco! |

Hi Chuck,
I say the 3317 is much better choice for conversion, much easier to convert the motor with the 60941 / 60760. The LFCM motor on the 3083 will not take the 60944 kit without major modification to the motor cover or you have to go the HAMO magnet route.
The decoder and speaker placement on both is a tight fit, but doable.
The better detailing and darkened wheels of the 3317 are another major plus for me.

Gordon I agree Gordon, the digital conversion would be rather easy. Though I must admit that the challenge of doing the earlier 3083 loco does have a sadistic appeal.  Now I have to figure out what a good price for one would be. There are several listed currently on ebay, the average is about 120 euros for NOS and about 100 euros used/like new condition. As long as it has a decent box, I'm leaning towards a nice used one as I plan on running it anyway. Chuck
