Hello:

I am thinking of buying my first N scale starter set, just as an addition to my HO set.

Kato and Bachman (much more economical) seem like good choices. Trix is too expensive.

I want something different from the usual

Any words of wisdom?

Thanks.

We saw an extensive N scale layout at the Brampton show. Didn't you say it was too small and fiddly?

If price is not an issue, then I would choose Kato in preference to Bachmann any day. Kato is made in Japan and they are generally known for producing a better quality product, both in HO and N. Most of their models are of US prototypes.

Kato make some very nice sets. Most are Japanese lines and come in a book like case. Lots of the latest high speed trains. They also do some American sets as well.I had lots of Kato n gauge before my old eyes and shaking hands left me no choice but to go to ho scale and Marklin.Kato might cost a little more but you get what you pay for with good quality locos and rolling stock. Take care EddieCool

N scale is a curiosity for me. I would never replace my HO set up for an N set up.

When I go to the local Credit Valley Railway store, when you come in there is a small but VERY nice N scale layout and the trains look REALLY CUTE. That is what make me think of getting a small set up I could add on my HO layout.

I have had in the past SERIOUS problems with the wagons of US trains coming apart to the point that it all became frustrating. I am concerned that the Bachman Super Chief train at US$99.00 as a complete set may have the same problem.

Kato is more expensive and judging by the comments here, I would do better to get Kato, hoping that the better quality will pay off in more fun.

If anyone has any personal experience with Kato and Bachman, or other makes, I would love to hear it.

Thanks.

One thing I should mention is that if you go with Kato track , points and controllor and you have a big layout the cable that comes with the points is not that long and I ended up cutting the ends off most of mine and making them longer and then putting the fitting back on. They might have changed it now and they do have extension cables, but that just adds to the cost of each point.The point on/off switchs can connect to each other and then to controllor but they are bulky and tend to come apart from each other.

Baggio,

As a long time N scaler, let me enlighten you about my GOLDEN rule of N Scale!

This is from over forty years experience in collecting N scale model trains!

Please memorize and remember the brand names with what they equate to!

Lifelike = Lifeless!
Bachmann = Back off man!
Atlas= Absolutely!
Kato= 素晴らしいです (Great!)
Fleischmann = Fabulous!
Minitrix = Marvellous!
Roco = Reliable!

Regards,

Michel

Has anyone had a problem with these trains having the wagons come apart? This is the problem I have with US HO trains.

Also, any more suggestions/feedback? PLEASE, with egg nog on (it is the Christmas season after all... Wink )

Kato all the way- the quality for the money/price absolutely cannot be beaten (in any scale)
