For those attending I cannot recommend or suggest strongly enough that you make the visit to Leonard Wiess Depot on Sunday afternoon to check out the 1 Gauge and other stuff there and be there for the finale !!
It is well worth the wait for the Lokzug and there are the free buses on standby that leave just after the trains go by, to take you around the circuit and back to Goppingen once more.
Edit; don't forget to ride the Railbus there from Goppingen Hbf, check out the schedule for Sunday afternoon

If you were genuinely keen

Go to Booking.com and search the area, preferably on the Stuttgart Ulm line, and I'm sure you could find something suitable, even if in Stuttgart ! Trains are your friend along with the "DB Navigator" app, on your Smartphone, well IPhone at least !
Esslingen is a good choice of town half way, but likely full already !

How you get to Stuttgart is something else, but I'm sure a cheap flight could be found to Stuttgart, or if not Frankfurt, get a DB pass also !

I've been twice, and stayed at Esslingen the first time and Eislingen two years ago, all well connected to Goppingen !

Yes, we are installed in our hotel in Bad Uberkingen, just south of Geislingen. I believe others have arrived at Hotel Hohenstaufen as well.

Looking forward to having a spa later, cheaper for being a hotel guest

haven't worked that out yet. However I do want to be at the Stauferpark reasonably early, so I can go down the museum and get wagons that I can take back to the car, and then probably go along to Leonard Weiss. You must take the trip on the VT795 from the railway station to Leonard Weiss if you haven't done it before.

I'm working in Germany, living in Rothenburg 140 kms away, so I think I'll take a car and have a look on Sunday.

we could add a visit to the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne, where one of these beasties lies, waiting for you Juhan, in operational condition, I think, along with an AE 8/14 which is painted in the machinery green colour of M39590, altho it looks worse on the prototype (Just my HO)
We did that in a morning with Jacques, and for the afternoons entertainment, we went by paddle Steamer from the Wharf opposite the Museum to the Rigi & up one side and down the other, and train back to Lucerne, a particularly pleasant day
But no Chinese talking loudly, only Cow Bells jingling

There is also a very nice and accurate DCC layout of the whole Gotthard line at the Museum

Hi all

We've had a fabulous day. We started at the station and had plenty of photo opportunities for the BR44, 52, 01, 001 and 050. There was also the E94 and the VT795.

Then on to the Leornard Weiss centre to go under a look and some thunderboxes.

Then on to the halls.

I'm sure pictures will follow shortly.

Actually, it is the first treff since 2005 that I miss. My son was born in june so it is not time to go for Göppingen this year, hopefully it is possible to attend the 2017 event. I hope you all enjoy your stay in Göppingen!

I have made a decision to definitely go to Marklin Days in 2017. I have thought about it for the last two times Marklin Days occurred 2013 and 2015. Now I have decided no more thinking time to start planning.

All the ideas for side trips that you wrote about sound very interesting to me. So add my name to your list of forum members interested in joining the group for 2017.

• Friedrichshafen, to have a Zeppelin ride
  
• Munich, for Oktoberfest (not that we drink a lot of beer -- too many carbs!)

• stopovers in Hong Kong, to eat and shop!

Planning already, except the airlines only list fares 1 year in advance.

After a visit to the museum, we topped off the day by the trip behind the BR01 This was the highlight of the trip for me and did a return trip to Amstetten. It was quite a climb up from Goppingen and plenty of opportunities for photos.

We also did the lokalbahn trip behind the BR75

I will post video clips next week.

I talked to a Märklin representative. He said that the model currently was under production. Deliverey about 2-3 weeks.
The model was presented at the Märklin stand. Sooo good...

I thought others might appreciate some impressions of this years Treff. I can not really compare it to past events, as it is only the second I have attended.

This year I thought the crowds were a bit smaller. I suspect the mixed weather had something to do with the attendance. There were also four venues, so that too may have thinned the crowds at each place. My earlier Treff there were three.

Over all I thought there was less for sale at the various displays. Preiser were not selling. They seemed to be concentrating on showing their new items. One member of this forum wanted to buy a locomotive from ESU, but they were on display only, not selling. Marklin and Brawa were selling.

There were two displays of restorers, who had done some amazing work with old Marklin and other makes. Some fo the restored items were from the late forties and fifties. One of them was selling, at up to 1400 euros for one item in its original box. To the untrained eye they looked brand new.

Marklin had a stand where you could assemble a locomotive for about 140 Euros. A number of the members of the forum had a go at it. I did too, well she was quite attractive, from Hungary. No, Marklin is not going to be taking me on as an assembler. Indeed she as good as said "Don"t give up your day job". Curiously, once assembled under her eagle eye, mine would not work on the test track. The supervisor came over, tested it, and in an impressive few seconds swapped out the decoder. It then worked well. He did in a matter of seconds what had taken me several minutes to do. No wonder they did not offer me a job.

One new thing I noticed, new to me anyway, was a system of digital couplers. They looked like mini Scharfeberg couplers that are put in the place of the usual ones. A decoder is then placed in the car, and assigned a number. By calling up that number that car can be uncoupled anywhere on the layout, and anywhere in the train. it was impressive to watch, but it made each freight car somewhat heavy. Pulling a long train equipped with this might be a problem.

I saw the Italian Z gauge layout. It was an impressive modelling of Monument Valley. I was struck by how much can be done in a small space. that said, Z is too small for me.

I saw the new 01, based on an East German model. It had the Boxpok wheels, and a long faring on top of the boiler. It is a beautiful model. They had it and the Bavarian Bull on roller test stands so you could see them in action. I am not sure the 01 is for me, as I have nothing to run it with. Those who have some East German DR rolling stock will be very tempted. It is beautiful.

I met Gale Cousins who is the new Marklin North America sales director. He is very enthuiastic, and comes from a model train background. He is based in the U.S. and will be staying based there. Maybe we will see better access to Marklin on this side of the pond. The new export sales manager was there too. He is Janko Franke. He too spoke of doing more to promote Marklin in North America. Fear not down under, I think he also has his sights on the antipodes!

Overall it was a wonderful experience. I met a number of members of this forum, and enjoyed their company very much.My apologies for missing the meeting at the overpass on Saturday. I can not even recall where I was at the appointed time, but it was not where I should have been.

My thanks to the various members of this forum who were there. They are wonderful patient teachers. They made it even more enjoyable. It was wonderful to meet with so many and talk Marklin.

I am planning on booking for 2017.
