Hi!

Trainini is a free German MRR magazine for Z scale (PDF). Downloads available here:
http://www.trainini.de/Downloads.html

Direct link to December issue:
http://www.trainini.de/d...oad/Trainini_2014-12.pdf

Note: The PDF is in German and I don't know how you can have the PDF translated to English automatically. But there also are lots of photos. And you can select portions of the text and paste it into the Google translator.

Starting at page 12 there is an extensive review of the new 05 003 (#88507), the first Fine Art model in Z scale.
They criticize that not all advertised features have been realized with the model: no interior details, distance between loco and tender not adjustable, no imitations of brakes and sandpipes, large gaps in the skirt when the fillers for showcase use are installed.
The paintjob was not carried out properly and they criticize the readability of the small prints are not as good as with other recent Märklin models.

In the review they write that this loco is very unusual for a Märklin steamer and they speculate it was made by a third party on behalf of Märklin.

According to Trainini the locos can be sent back to Märklin to have some improvements done. It seems they want to address the spacing between loco and tender, the ugly screws there, the gaps between fillers and skirts, and the missing interior details.

#88507 is an exclusive Insider model, an analogue Z gauge loco with an RRP of €999.95.
Not my era and way beyond my budget, so I didn't order it.

Forum members who ordered the loco but didn't get it yet can hope that they will receive the improved model.
Regards
Tom

My god that is unbelievable........ I am stunned that it was allowed to be shipped at all.

I doubt if I had bought that at even half the list price I would even give Marklin the chance to make amends..... I'd just want my money back and they could keep it.

I feel sorry for anyone that bought it.
Sad when its cheaper to buy a new 29640 starter set from Germany than a CS2 on its own in Oz, welcome to the joys of Marklin down under .

Seems a lot of money for Z scale. Blushing

I suspect that the article generated enough customer outrage that Marklin had no choice but to do something about the problem..

A quick and nasty translation, I've left out the lead-in about the BR05. I've bound to have mucked up some of it Blushing

The model implementation Märklin surprised with the choice that role model many Zetties. Since the engine in any Operating condition - we see from photographing and camouflage in the last DR-design times from - Production variants allowed, it is certainly not the most thankful template for a large-scale model. This property should have the manufacturer probably prompted the locomotive as hand hang produced brass model and with it to begin the experiment that used to Trix Minitrix and well-known series "Fine Art" to establish itself in the mini-club. Is understandable insofar as the decision, this premiere initially available only to members of the insider Clubs reserve. Rather, it is incomprehensible, however, for a proposed model with fine details select a model that only few suitable characteristics possessed:

The skin shows up on the Rivets almost entirely smooth surfaces and the view on the engine is of the streamlining almost completely covered. The new model had thus already in his announcement hard on offer Demonstrate value for just under 1000.00 EUR purchase price. Marklin took the
balancing act and announced the model in its MHI exclusive novelties 2/2014,

inter alia, with the following product properties:
· Openwork brass wire wheels,
· High performance coreless motor with effect on a metal gearbox,
· Warm white LED,
· Upper encounter lights switched separately,
· System clutch back
· Buffer with flat and curved plates,
· Enclosed filler pieces for the skirt recess,
· Glazed cab,
· Replica of the cab facility,
· Adjustable locomotive tender-distance,
· Enclosed aftermarket equipment to complete the rear buffer beam and
· Indicated brake imitations, sand down pipes and rail guards.

Therefore, and because of its premiere character we wanted Märklin 05003 in the test quite See more accurately. As we unpacked the model for the first time, we noticed be the same high weight - a typical feature of brass construction.

We had doubts about the catalog description that it is "perfectly crafted brass-etched parts worked "was. Due to our skepticism was particularly the many curves in the region of Front cab, but also the carbon case cover tender, dealing with a casting much easier practicable. At the delivered model but no transitions between cast and etched parts were observed. for the evaluation of the locomotive is this point anyway subordinated, is much more important than a clean Processing.

Our special highlight is a reason rather in the house for the Märklin rather strange Messingätztechnik. This suggests, in our view, that a manufacturer for 05 003 with Has operated front cab of an external supplier.

This assumption is also fueled by the fact that the basic structure of the model greatly by all other steam engines this is different. And these points awaken overlooking the intricacy and Precision engineering of the Z gauge our curiosity, because small, not everyone can. optical rating Märklin Stromlinienlok is expensive packaged:

The announced wooden casket rests in a thin Cardboard box, in the known design with logos, item number and a photo of the model is printed.
Films and a separate carton to protect the packaging elements. operating Instructions and warranty are in the outer carton.
The wooden box is in mahogany Color stained and bears colored fittings and Imprints of logos "Märklin" and "Fine Art".
Inside lies also in Film embarked model in Foam embedded.
Come to the fore also a metal replica of the factory shield 1937, one for the Showcase retrofit linkage dummy and a red notice list, to the removal of the Covers for the driving points.

The rigid linkage replica was not explicitly announced and as such a surprise. It is a doubly buckled and plain red lacquered etched part. Correctly taken into account are the different positions of And control linkage on both sides. Not able to convince the indiscriminate application of paint, the bright parts of the Steam engine does not even begin to take into account. However, this criticism comes to nothing, because after installed according to instructions on the gear cover is from this part nothing more to see. The only exceptions are the webs, the most of the side rods for mounting gear ground lead. And it is that we would rather not see, because they have nothing in common with the model. than Impression may serve our photographs showing 05 003 with the aperture Apron -

Conclusion this Zurüstteil: superfluous as a goiter. But on the engine itself we find many points of criticism. Makes it in the showcase option total also a good figure, so it is difficult or even impossible dissolved detailed features her a good Verhageln testimony. First there are the aforementioned skirt panels, each with a Phillips screw fixed to the leading and trailing bogie. You clearly have too many Column to create the illusion of a closed panel. On the long side appear to us the top fan too little worked out, while on a model shoot always stood out very clearly.
Most serious point is, however, the rear of the locomotive, because Cornering not only drops the view to replicate the smoke chamber door under the cowl. Before lying in the dark, correct black-painted detail to Eye drops, two occurred almost huge-looking Phillips screws out.
They lie approximately at the level of the bridge tender and keep loud explosion drawing from the manual, the Housing on the chassis firmly. This extremely unfortunate placement is one of the Märklin so unusual design features. What from this perspective is hardly noticeable, the window film with which the glazing are the Discs was simulated. What is an advantage here but will return at the front cab into Contrary to. For a little perspective, the discs are here at all perceive why the viewer thinks to look into three rectangular holes. Leave only upon closer inspection they ever make, but they conform to the model shots:
The film is circular arc well behind the pursuit of Front window. On the prototype were Flat glass panes each right and left-justified used.
In the model, the would probably only with a transparent injection molding convincingly play. in view of the required purchase price we would expect the safe allowed. Are separately applied to the locomotive body the holding rods to the Ascents. They consist of wire, of each rounded inkel disappears at the ends in a 90 ° -W in the housing.

For the rear rise to the Smoke chamber is that correct, on Cab forward not. There should be at the top and lower ends are actually knobs.
During the tender in the side view can be very convincing, he also has the back optical shortcomings. Have really liked especially the freestanding mounted grab bars on the rear upper side and also recognized ladders on the back. Disturbing feature which - compared to each other Märklin model - large Support for the clutch system, because of the Faltenbalgnachbildung fails too short. The clean pressure of the oval Factory shield can not consolation for this shortcoming, unfortunately. Wrapped we were, whether this with resolve the announced Zurüst- or reconditioned parts could, but still lacking completely. It does not seem to be a pack mistake, because other, explicitly announced Product features are affected: So also lack the cab means the braking imitations, Sand down pipes and rail guards.

Contrary to the product description and the locomotive tender Distance is not adjustable. The brake imitations have good on the technically required Hole in the apron (see FIG. Stock photo Page 16) hinwegetröstet. Imagine would have been yes, that the skirt for measuring equipment in Parts had to be dismantled, Set the model plant operation about.

So it would during a test drive yes still consistent worked. ironic effect that the elements of the Brake frame even in the product picture the carton clearly are to be seen! For unfortunate picture bears and the 4.0mm clearly High-Lok Tender distance for. he is the main reason for the Längenmaßabweichung compared to the model, while all other Values taken surprisingly well (see info box). The promised adjustment
here was the (lost) key to success.

Greatest strength of the model are his broken wheels the fine spokes Marklin already in his announcement had deliberately highlighted. There was however, suggests that all Wheels of the locomotive completely made of brass were prepared. Indeed, this is but only in the dome of the wheels Case but also the a three-cylinder engine displaced Counterweights for the first time in Play model. The wheels in the tender and in the Lokdrehgestellen have injection molding cores, as we also from other Know steam engines. yet even with them holds no metal disc on the inside of the view of the viewer.

Colouring and lettering

Also Märklin's classic strengths know when the first edition of a brass model only partly convince. Fresh out of the box seems to all be true: The paint is clean and evenly, all hues seem made perfect. The Tampon prints the address of the locomotive and Tender attached precise and flawless.
The praise is especially the two-tone trim, the whole to the Lok run, the lateral Tender addresses and the lamp rings one exception:
On the left Tender lantern shows our Test object visible interruption in the chrome surround (see photo on Page 19 below), which is actually a Sent Quality

Control for reworking would have to be. What us when viewing macro photography yet noticed three are blank prominent, raised areas (only) of the Tender cover. We can not check whether it's at a missing or incorrect primer is not sufficiently before Painting was degreased, it may be due to the paint used and whether it to other models the series concerns.

With regard to the advertised top quality we have the model for protection against grease and scratches handled with special gloves, as well as in high-quality art unique items for use come. By the way, were those white gloves once the "Goldlok" Series 10 to 25 years Mini-Club anniversary (Part No. 88891) at the factory.

Technical review

Märklin has highlighted the coreless motor in its product description. an Feature of this air core drive is the missing cogging torque, so the starting voltage even the smallest permanent driving voltage. In the test, the model ran at 1.8 volts with the equivalent of 17.4 km / h scale speed and ran in uniform motion turnouts. At position 100 on Märklin transformer 67011 we measured a current of 17.5 mA, which only slightly increases at 150 to 22 mA. We certify the model good controllability and quiet, as quiet operation at each selected speed. The specified minimum radius of 195 mm is behaviourless passed through. In this respect, the locomotive passed this discipline without flaws. However, it unfortunately remains a dilemma between a visually appealing largely showcase model and good driving with significant drawbacks in appearance.
For safe power consumption in addition to the dome wheels nor the three rear rigid Tender axes used on both poles by spring plates. This requires an electrical Connection between locomotive and tender, which was solved quite unremarkable. The cables are nearly invisibly through the long drawbar that of the tender bogie and trailing bogie Lok is screwed.

The Directional Lighting is done with warm white LED and is thus in line with the times. The illumination of all lanterns is smooth and good. Shortly before the start it is visible as soon as a measurable track voltage. A new and good idea is to Deactivation function for the upper encounter light, with implications for both the locomotive and the tender effect. On the prototype, it was by no means a Triple headlights. The top lantern was as
thought extra character and securely mounted in the flow line steam locomotives.

Märklin has the simply using a small slide switch, but effectively implemented. It is placed in the Chassis ground of the tender behind the second axis - available but only with the help of a small screwdriver.

Since the driving really fun, we ended soon after at the question of what we 05003 could append? With a proud 71 g weight, we must not only a high contact reliability even a lot of traction expect. Nevertheless, we have the limitations of this Model being exhausted and finally measured. reason is that we always have a prototypical close Seek operation. And heavy express trains had the pulverized coal locomotive never on Hooks.

Historical photographs show them from an older Schnellzugwagen (see Fig. on page 13), in which housed the measuring devices were. Come closest to this Images of Württemberg Car of the train set 87945, once the "Olympialok" the Series were offered 181. they carry at least the appropriate Color and would still fit with the DRG characters sent to the distribution in 1937 of the model. Credible would also be a locomotive brake at the other end, which, with the aid of a motor to the gain easier Schlepptenderlokmodells in Reichsbahn labeling could. To solve (mostly) only the missing dome possibility at the front end. To Sisyphean task is the re-attachment of the bogies after the end of the driving test. Jumping the small Phillips screws from the screwdriver, there is a risk that they might disappear, never to return in the housing and jam there. The perating instructions is silent as to how the housing may be removed in such a case. Our advice is, therefore, an individually to set the aperture and hold it with one hand, while the engine is turned on its side. Earlier, a screw with the screwdriver is included and can now be chosen prudently. If they still away, land it safely to the working document for another attempt.

Product recall and summary

The test result could not be streaky. On the one hand, there are excellent Handling characteristics that are ideal for operation of the so unlucky with the prototype locomotive. Diametrically opposite are not serious shortcomings in the optical evaluation, a model this price range are worthy.
It is certainly in spite of the highlighted Handwork is not a small series model in the usual sense. Well, almost all small manufacturers offer considerably more for considerably less Money.
A recent example is the Wismar Schienenbus Z-model construction, the closely comparable to the range is 23 Bahls of model railways (Review in Trainini® 12/2009).
At this judgment, the fine can and broken wheels change anything, the innovation in the field of Represent gauge Z. For use of such fine parts would it also probably been more grateful models, where the view on the engine does not remain almost completely closed.
That the locomotive has got too expensive for this quality of implementation, including Marklin now seems to have recognized.

On 11 December 2014, the manufacturer has addressed a call back to its dealers and the delivery of other models stopped. They were come to the conclusion that they "this Can improve the model and want. "

The great locomotive tender distance, a filigraneres Working out explicitly called for reworking Glands at the Lokrückseite and high demands sufficient clearances to the aperture to be executed as an etching or brass part. Ask the Göppinger also want the Challenge is to replicate the actually promised cab facility. We hope that it additionally also for a visually stunning effect when driving important brakes replicas will make up for on the trucks. On sand downspouts and Schienenräumer under the disguise would rather do without.

Whatever come out of this rework: We will accompany it critically and inform our readers. We remain confident that at the end of this process, an implementation is that is its price and worth a praise with us.

Hope it all make sense to you Confused BigGrin

If I understand the review correctly, this represents a major blunder, rather than a minor oversight.

I suppose on the one hand we should applaud the fact that Märklin accept that they got it wrong and are willing to try and rectify the issue, but on the other for a company renown for its quality and attention to detail this is a sad day.

Over the years I have spoken to quite a few enthusiasts who state that Märklin's quality and professionalism puts them ahead of other manufacturers, well this must raise a big question mark over the future direction of the company.

Wow.
At 1k euros for a Z scale loko, I am expecting something like a fine piece of jewelery. This is, after all, what their advertising presented to us. I was truly excited about the model. I said as much here when the product was announced. I was not interested in purchasing one, it is not my era or scale, but I felt it could be a great product that would improve Marklin's quality image.
They may not be able to fix all the problems simply because they are having to begin with the product at hand. What do they do then? Offer the product at a reduced price? Scrap the entire production lot?
So I go back to a question I asked a month or so ago when MikeC presented us with the paint work on his latest Swiss electric loko - Who's approving these products for production?

But I do have the obligatory (six) SBB Krocs
ECoS 50200, all FX and MFX decoders replaced with ESU V4s, operated in DCC-RailCom+ with ABC brake control.
With the exception of the passenger wagens with Marklin current conducting couplers, all close couplers have been replaced with Roco 40397.
