Hi i have heard that Marklin have been working on digital Z. If it comes out next year, i may well get a start set. and start up with that  i use to have a large collection of Z, but ended up selling most of it to fund life and other things  still, i have seen Marklin new HO start sets and i woundered if the start set may look like it in Z  Z start sets are very few and far between, there latist xmas train set is very odd Would you be temted by this HO start set in Z!!! danmarklinman attached the following image(s): |

Wow! Great layout! Pity it had to go.
Modellers of the US scene have been able to buy decoders and digital controllers for a long time, but those of us who model the European scene (read DB, SBB and OBB) have only, so far as I know, had one choice for Z decoders - Velmo. At about 65 Euros each, that's the sort of thing you need to have won the lottery to be able to afford.
M* tried back in 1988, but they couldn't get around the decoder heat dissipation issue. Hopefully they will manage it this time. |

Mostly Marklin.Selection of different eras and European railways
Small C track layout, control by MS2, 100+ trains but run 4-5 at a time.

Thanks for sharing the great layout pics.
As a Z'er here's hoping that a M retry at digital Z is successful and leads to a greater range of products. Hopefully it will inspire the model suppliers and others to re-evaluate the Z market and release more range of products too. As one who uses Velmo decoders I know how reliable they are and how more true to scale speed trains run.

Wal Marklin Z did very well in my region in the UK, as we had two stockist of Z, unfortunately one owner sold his business to someone else who then turned it into just selling military kits, who then went bust!! The other is still going, but is mostly mail order!!! So Marklin lost it's shop window. Marklin Z did do well dispite this, with a few layouts doing the exerbition circuit, it gets noticed!! HO is non existent compared to Z in the UK. Marklin have had to retool all there steam locos, which is there biggist sale area in Z. All of the steamers were tooled in the mid 70s and are out of date with today's standards. Digital Z is a must if I am to start with it again. As long as the decoders have load compensation and braking delay. MFX would be nice as well as sound, but perhaps that is just a little to far!! Did you ever exhibit this at the Brokenhurst show in Hampshire?
I am guessing about 14 years ago, it just looks very similar to the layout that inspired me and my wife to start with Marklin.

Ashley Yes you are right. And if i did inspire you, i am very pleased to hear it cheers Sadly the layout and most of my Z ,apart from one or two bits got sold. I now have a almost completed HO marklin French layout. Which is small, but like the Z i built is cramned with detail! But i mis the Z very much and plan to get back into it, once a ood start set comes out, which i like. Diseaux as i called it, was exsibited for about four years before i became a dad then life took over!! It got sold to someone in the UK, who never kept in touch. so i have no idear if it is still in one piece or got broken up. I have big plans for my next Z, hopefully it will inspire more to Build with Marklin |
