Hello,
I have a BR50 from the starter set 29821. It has a MFX decoder. The sound volume on this loco is very low. When the loco is going full speed, I can only hear the motor noise and barely hear the chuffing. Whistle is quite low too although it can be heard.
I was under the impression that I could increase the volume with a lokprogrammer. I bought a lokprogrammer recently and installed it yesterday (was not easy).
I found that the volume was set to the max (255). Is there any other setting I need to look into?
The starter set came with a V160 loco too. This one has a good sound volume.

The BR 50 is famous for a faulty sound decoder although I would have thought this would have been fixed by now. Perhaps you have really old stock. A CS will change the sound volume for you but you do not say what control you are using.
I would suggest you go back to your dealer and have the decoder changed.

Even when when the sound decoder is working properly its not very loud, I was at my dealers two Saturdays ago and someone famous was looking at that set and I helped set the sound to the max level, as it was he didn't take the set. |

It probably is old stock since I bought it on clearance. Not sure what you mean by 'Control'. I was using a lokprogrammer to try and change the volume. |

Hi there,
I think it was in this forum; the Br 50 locomotives from the 29821 starter set is fitted with the wrong speaker. A 100 Ohm speaker should fix this problem. I have the same loco but didn't fix the problem as of yet.

Try switching from default setting of 4 chuffs per revolution to 2. I found this to work on my class 10. If that does not help, then I would return the Loc. where you bought it.

Is there any way to tell by looking at the speaker how many ohms it is? |

4 chuffs per revolution are prototypical for class 50 (class 10: 6 chuffs per revolution). Is the sound louder with lesser chuffs??? |

The chuffsd are more pronounced at higher speed. set at 6 per revolution, at higher speed, the sound is more like a diesel with hardly any break between cylinder revolutions.
On the class 10 which is fx, the change is made on the second to last dip switch on the decoder.
On the 50, with a CS, you probably do it from the screen selections.

With a CS you can adjust the chuffs per revolution for speed step 1 - and you can adjust how the time between chuffs decreases at higher speed steps. This allows to be prototypical at slow speeds and slightly slower at high speeds ... Since the chuffs are much more articulated with mfx than with the old fx decoder, there is no need to make such an adjustment. The volume will not increase ... |

I have the starter set 29820 (should be same as 29821 but with 230V) and I think my sound is ok, I will try it later today or maybe later this week. |

I have the starter set 29820 (should be same as 29821 but with 230V) and I think my sound is ok, I will try it later today or maybe later this week. I have sent my loco back to the dealer. Hopefully he can fix it. |
