so a neighbour came around and I was showing him the progress on my new layout. Realising how much work was involved he stated: " Wow, I bet you will be pleased when this is all over"
Then, on observing the Würtenbuger 'C' and her long rake of antique rolling stock, he asked, "Are some of these made to look old?"
What crazy questions and statement have you had? |

Some people just don't get it...
A layout article from about 30 years ago in Model Railroader described how the author built a quarter size mockup in cardboard and paper, to judge whether or not the 2-dimensional drawing would actually work out in the real. A visitor looked at it and asked: "OK, so where are the choo choos?" |
Gary Z Scale "Never let the prototype get in the way of a good layout" |

My 8 yr old neighbour girl said, when she saw my H0 steamers for the first time:
"Oh, I never knew that in the days of steam trains they made miniature models as well... those must be very old"

One of our neighbours suspected that I grow weed at our house as she has noticed bluish light from our second floor windows (curtain slots) She actually invited her self to our house and wanted to look around. My wife took her from the basement to attic and she was quite surprised when she saw my unfinished layout. She asked my wife if the layout is finished Br502362 attached the following image(s):

Here' s another funny one. Years ago my wife had invited her brother and sister inlaw over for Christmas. We had not seen them very much as my wife's brother is in the military and was stationed out west in Alberta. Once over, my wife's brother mentioned that he would like to see the layout that I made in the basement and his wife asked if she could tag along! I said no problem but please do not touch anything! My sister inlaw seemed a little perplexed as I was operating the layout so I asked her what's troubling you? So she says to me, "How come you're not blowing a train whistle when you run your toy trains, I always thought that men who play with toy trains have a train whistle to blow when they play, "toot, toot!"" I looked at her and rolled my eyes! Then I said to my wife's brother, is she for real! He looked dumbfounded!

They'd be horrified by the "weathered" models you can buy.
I was admiring a couple of BR MK1 coaches made by Bachmann as a special edition yesterday, they were models of part of a test train used to give locos fresh from overhaul a good workout before they were released to traffic. As you might expect the prototypes were the oldest, roughest-looking coaches which could still be hauled safely, and very seldom saw either a washing plant or a paint shop. The grime and staining on the model roofs was spectacularly mucky and also superbly done, I very nearly bought a pair then remembered that I don't have a 2-rail layout to run them on.
Explain those to the uninitiated... |

LGB did that in their boardroom many years ago. There have also been a handful of restaurants and bars, and obviously the sushi conveyor belt is a similar idea.
Having tried it in G before now I can say that it's a terrible idea. You need very gentle curves and very precise slow running to avoid tipping tall glasses over or getting the free surface effect in the contents. The track also takes up a lot of room, so unless you have a dining table with huge amounts of empty space in the middle then it's not going to work! |

Dale,
years ago when we displayed our layout about 250km south of Perth we had quite a lot of followers due to a hectic advertising campaign. the town was a tourist destination for families from Christmas onwards until the end of the school holidays in February. on a Saturday afternoon, a gentleman entered the hall, paid the entry fee and came up to and I asked him, are you from Perth ? and he replied yes, he than inquired was the layout 2 or 3 rail and I told him it was 3 rail, well he turned around, went straight to the exit, hopped into his car and disappeared down the road, I assumed driving back to Perth. we just looked at each other and asked ourselves: what was this all about. didn't have the time to ask why he came, what interests him, regarding mode train layouts. our family will remember this for years to come.

another time, again displaying our layout but this time at the German Club in Perth, it took several negotiations to be able to hire one of the halls. not knowing what the hall was used for, we proceeded with putting the layout together and by the time we've finished it just fitted in nicely, on one side they had a door for some equipment and also had windows above, we installed a long podium for the children to see the 1 meter high layout as well. on a Sunday morning several members came in and to their astonishment they couldn't get to the door or into the room, and almost an argument started they had to get in because every Sunday (apparently for years) they do their pot shooting and all their gear was in that room, the demand was made for me to dismantle the layout so they can get in and I said this is impossible, I can't shift the layout, the only chance they had is to stand on the podium and with the help of a chair or ladder (I can't remember exactly) they had to climb through the window, I explained to them no one has mentioned it to me and I rightfully hired the hall for a specific period of time. Hah, I had a good friend come by and after seeing my very slight and poor fiddle yard/shelf layout say ; "Man, why don't you just build a track to send the trains through all the rooms and even the exterior balcony, that would be great !" ... ... my response was; "Ahem, I don't think you know my wife well enough yet ... ^^ " Y |

We all, or most of us go to model train exhibitions, I for instance never been keen on joining any model train club and there was an opportunity to join one years ago but I've decided against it. as usual you have the president, vice president and treasurer. well the president always pointed out the benefits of a digital system and how diverse it can be expanded it and also it has so many applications, one thought by his conviction he must know a lot about it, anyhow the day came and the exhibition was on again and the club displayed their layout. I visited them and commented what good job they did after a general discussion the president came up to me and said, I can't understand why the turnouts keep on changing when the train enters the siding. I've had a quick look and noticed they had the switching tracks most probably to run the trains automatically. looking as to what was happening I said to him, have you got any extra pick up shoes on your passenger carriages ? and the answer I think was: I don't know, by looking closer, the culprit was revealed, the last carriage had a pick up shoe and of course activating the switching track for a second time. I thought well mate you are the greatest digital expert I have seen for a long time, although it is always inspiring to get people into this hobby I had the feeling the purpose of creating a club lied somewhere else, not by or his expert knowledge.
