Hi guys! I have a problem with my Mobile station 2 and a loco equipped with a Loksound 4.0 running DCC with 128 speedsteps. When setting off (first "klick" on the red knob) the loco starts creeping veery slowly just as it should. If I then continue to accelerate through the "clicks" in sequence the loco will not change speed utnil I reach the 10th click. And then it surges forward with a big increase in speed immediately. The word "ketchup-effect" comes to mind . First nothing then everything at the same time. I have done a test, running the loco with an old Roco Multimaus without problems. The loco had smooth acceleration without the aforementioned problem. So I dont think it's a problem with the decoder. Has anyone of you experienced this? Best Regards! Hi, Emil,
Make sure the MS2 is set to DCC 128 (not DCC 28 or DCC 14). Or did you register the loco as MM? Sounds as if the loco is operated with 14 speed steps only.
Which version does your MS2 have? |

Hi H0!
Thanks for the reply!
The loco is set to the highest amount of speedsteps in the loco menu that allows for adjusting Address, Vmax, Vmin etc. At the bottom you can select "fahrstufen". The menu actually says 126 speedsteps but I guess it's the same as 128.
I'm not sure about the version but It's never been updated so I guess its v1.0. :)
Best Regards!
Emil

IIRC the MS2 did not support 126 speed steps (there are only 126 speed steps with DCC 128 or mfx). So probably your MS2 needs an update to solve that issue. There is an information screen somewhere that shows the current software version.
Update can be done from an MS2 or CS2 with current software. |

When you buy MS2,it´s in standard speed. DCC...126 speed step MM...14 and 27 step...depends decoder. mfx...128 speed step mfx+...128 speed step...MS2 must have version 1.83 to use mfx+ decoder.
Go first to choise DCC protocol and choise 28 or 126 speed steps. If yours speed knob in the MS2 does not control locomotivs in correct speed,it´s default. Because you did said Rocos multimaus works fine,so yours locomotiv works as it does. |

Hi again!
Thanks guys for helping me out! Very much appreciated.
I've checked my MS2 and I'm running software version 1.81. I see Anders mention the v.1.83, would upgrading solve my issue or should it've been solved with the version that I already have?
Also, is there anywhere other than in the loco speedstep menu, that you have to change values for the MS to "understand" DCC 126? The speedsteps on my loco are programmed to 126 which is the highest possible value available. But as H0 wrote the running is more like DCC 14.I just want to be sure that I've set everything up correctly.
Again, thanks! And I apologise if I'm asking dumb questions. :)

I have seen your problem on one of my locomotives, but it mostly have something to do with the way the speed curve is set in the decoder. Fiddling with these values can make the locomotive behave as intended. You are not asking dumb questions. The speed step values can be a bit tricky. No worries! A side note: The 126 vs. 128 speed step confusion may have something to do with the way the MS2 visualizes this. DCC has 128 speed steps, but the first two speed steps 0 and 1 are represented by stop and emergency stop. Thus reducing the actual number of speed steps, where the locomotive can be expected to move, to 126. Some systems also calls this 127 depending on how they communicate "stop" to the user. Knowing that, I would expect that if you set the Mobile Station 2 to DCC 126 - it would be the same as setting other systems to 128 or 127. |

I made a test today with the only loco I ever converted with an ESU LokSound V4 with DCC 126. It worked as expected: it definitely showed more than 28 speed steps and allowed minor variations of the speed..
Years ago I tested the track signal of an MS2 with version 1.64 with the sniffer port of my CS1R and found 124 speed steps in DCC 126 mode. With version 1.81 and version 2.10 I found 125 speed steps.
The first click goes directly to speed step 2, the next click does nothing, another click goes to speed step 3.
Søren: People who say DCC 14 and DCC 28 should consequently say DCC 126. People who say DCC 128 should consequently say DCC 16 and DCC 30. DCC 128 includes standstill and emergeny stop, DCC 14 and DCC 28 exclude them (but also have them). The displays of both Intellibox and CS1R go from 0 to 14, from 0 to 28, or from 0 to 126 respectively. |

Hi again! I just wanted to thank you for helping me out. I'll try to change the speedcurve on my loco. And on my next trip to the local Märklin dealer I'll ask for an update of my MS as I don't have a CS2 (yet) :). BTW Søren I really like your website, keep up the good work! It's bookmarked! Again thanks, hope to talk to you soon again! Best regards! Emil Edited by user 13 May 2014 18:29:40(UTC)

Hi! Just wanted to report that as I was instructed, an update of the software in the Mobile Station solved my problem. I was at an authorised Märklin dealer last week and he loaded the new SW for me from a CS2. The acceleration in 126 speedstep mode is now very seamless and easily controlled without noticeable steps between certain notches on the red knob as before. Märklin recently released a fresh SW-version for the MS2, v.2.1. So that was the one I got. Have the problem I described? Get the update - problem solved! Thanks for all the replies in this thread!
