The California Zephyr (CZ) train was operated by three different US railroads. Consequently, the Burlington, Rio Grande (DRG&W) and Western Pacific (WP) railroads each served a stretch of the route, respectively. While auntie M offered locomotive models for two out of the three railroads - WP F7 ABB in the CZ train package and DRG&W F7 and Alco PA with double-headed Units, respectively (albeit no B units) - there were no Burlington passenger locomotives produced (only green freight versions). Here is an idea how to overcome this: In the 1960s there was a Fleischmann # 1343/1344 double-headed silver Burlington F7 which is popping up on eBay from time to time. While originally not much detailed and with wide coupler distance, it seems to be possible to detail them to bring them up to modern aesthetic standards in order to have a complementing motive power for the California Zephyr. Still, this would be a two-rail version. Two obtain a thee-rail version, a radical approach would be to place the Fleischmann shells on Maerklin F7 frames, which is doable - see pic. Yes I have thought of that. I actually have one such Fleischmann bodies in my "box of projects"... but now that I feel increasingly confident with my 2- to 3-rail conversion techniques, I may just end up biting the bullet and getting a whole set. Will keep you posted! Thanks again for the suggestion! Cheers Edited by user 08 April 2014 08:52:26(UTC)

Since this turns into a vintage Fleischmann US stock related thread, I changed the header accordingly. Got myself a consist of five Santa Fe Hi-Liners with NMRA couplers. One coupler is missing and another one is broken. Seeked (and obtained prompt) advice from Jvuye. Procured coupler conversion starter set by German maker SYMOBA (http://www.symoba-schniering.de/produkte.htm). Am travelling. Will start conversion process soon. Hi, The old Fleischmann US stuff has quite a following here in Australia.
In the mid-1950s, Fleischmann was offered readily in the shops here, as an alternative to the ubiquitous Hornby Dublo brand. No doubt, to help the Europeans and Brits recover from that devastating war, and put tinned goods back on the table.
My first train set was a Fleishmann, albeit with the German tinplate rolling stock, but a Marklin-like class 80 in die-cast metal. I remember my father explaining how German precision engineering and toy making was simply the best. Oh how I used to salivate over the pages of my first catalogue - 1960, which I still have.

Hello Kimball,
Lovely family story!
Whilst my first and only trainset as a child was a Hornby Dublo , my boys were brought up on the Märklin I accumulated starting 1983. Only the youngest (now 30 yrs old) still has any interest in the layout development. Perhaps in turn they may have model trains with their children but the whole such thing in life seem different now.
Regards,
PJ

Hi Kimball, Papuan, hm? And you are older than 16? Well, I do not know Papuan, but my German helped to get the desired information. Yes, it is rare and was only produced for the US market. Source: http://www.effert.de/Album/1435G.htm |

When I lived in Canada a friend of mine got the Union Pacific set for me from a 2nd shop in Portland in the USA. Mine had both F units powered and it came with 5 tin plate coaches. The UP version was the only one that had both units powered. Some of the gears were plastic which could wear out on the motors. Two of the coaches had lights [ 2 big bulbs in each from the roof ] I always liked that set even if it was a bit noisy and sorry I ever sold it .Eddie

The Hi-Liners came with interior lighting, meant to be fed by the Fleischmann two-rail system. I converted one of the terminal sidings by isolating one of the rails and connecting it to the "inner third rail" feeder, thus being able to run locos on the track while at the same time feeding the interior lamps of the coaches. I detected some info on the black and white US Fleischmann advertisments: Charlie Merzbach, a colorful character in the US model railroad business, was from the late 1940’s until the 1970’s the US Agent for Fleischmann (in the 1960 also for Arnold). Many of his early advertisements - shown above - featured Blaze Starr, a then famous exotic dancer (The gentleman on the other ads is Charlie Merzbach himself). This probably raised a few eyebrows, but I understand that the target audience was returning military personnel. |
