Hello all, I have this beauty, but doesn't run [:(]. It still have the "Made in West Germany" markings. So it is a early high efficiency 5 pole dig model. The lok is fitted with c80 decoder (6080?). Can someone give me the current part number? Can I still buy this decoder from Marklin? I also own the newer 37021 with condenser tender and 37022 with the later tender plus MFX/Loksound. When I opened the boiler of the 3602 I noticed that the drum motor is not the same of 37021 and 37022. So here is my question: If I replace the defective decoder with the original c80, do I get the same running characteristics of 37021 and 37022? Would be a viable option to replace the motor coil magnet by ESU permanent and instalation of lokpilot. Would this cheaper? Would the model run better  Anybody has done this mod? Ed |

I'm not sure but from your description I understand that your model is a Delta digital one (motor with coil). If the motor is a 5 pole one, then it might give you somewhat better driving characteristic to replace the coil with a magnet and add an ESU. If it is not, putting in a 5 pole in will definetely improve the running.
ESU decoder + magnet option cost almost like M*.

Hi Ed,
Cem is right on the fact that the motor is similar to a Delta one, i.e. a 3-pole with coil (AC), this motor can be controlled with a C80 decoder. However, to obtain the running characteristics that are similar to the other two models you mention, you will need to convert the motor to a 5-pole motor with a permanent magnet (DC) and control it with either a Märklin decoder (from set 60901/60921) or an ESU Lokpilot, for instance. The solution you mention will also work, but it might be worthwhile spending a little more on the other two motor parts (anchor and motorshield) and get it done completely.
But... why doesn't the model run? Could it be that it just needs to be cleaned and oiled a little?

Ed, If it is definitely a 3602, then it has a 3 pole DCM motor, with 6080 decoder, which is the earliest type made by marklin and has no load regulation.
The cheapest way to make it high efficiency digital is with the 60760 decoder kit. This has the parts for the 3 pole to 5 pole conversion, and a reasonably good, load regulated decoder.
Next most expensive is with a Hamo magnet and ESU decoder, as you suggested, and will give you similar performance but not quite as smooth at low speeds because of the 3 pole motor.
Best conversion, but at a price, is with the 60921 decoder kit. This is like the 60760 but with a better decoder.
Alternatively, you can always mix and match and substitute an ESU decoder in the marklin kits. Some prefer to do this.

PS - Are you sure it's the decoder. You can also sometimes find 6080 decoders for sale on Ebay very cheap. Try just replacing it to be sure, but also follow Sander's advice and check the motor and brushes first. |

I plan to order a couple to convert the last of my Delta loks to 5*. Will probably go with a lokpilot or loksound for the decoder.

The model is 3602 and I am almost positive that has a 3 pole rotor, although the owner's manual mention includes instructions for 3502 too which is high efficiency 5 pole and non dig (?). So the 3502 would ride better than 3602? Is another M* non-sense.
The model is in new mint condition. I remember now that I tried to run it 6 years on some tracks that laid in my place with a 6021 and didn't worked. When I took to the Marklin service guy here in the Bay Area, it was running with an intellibox. I stored again. Recently, I took out of box and it is not working again [:(!] .
There is not hum or any indication that the motor wants to start. First, I will check the brushes.
Is the 60760 decoder kit a decoder plus 5 pole rotor plus a permanent magnet like the 60921 decoder kit? Because if is the case, it is 3 times cheaper [:0] than the later one. What would be the riding differences?
Can I get just a 5 pole rotor and magnet kit from M*? What is the part number?

The 3502 "High Efficiency" analog 5-pole motor is junk... It was efficient in drawing current, lots of it... They dropped that motor after only 2 years or so in the earlier 90:s... Maybe it worked ok with the PWM controller M had for a while...
I'd go for replacing the whole motor and the decoder. It's take the cheapo 60760 option first, and if it's not satisfactory - get the better ESU mfx decoder. Cheaper than getting the 60921 kit... |

The only difference AFAIK between the 60760 and the 60921 is the decoder. The running is not quite as good, but acceptable, and there are no functions apart from lights and f4 for disabling the acceleration and deceleration delay.
If you want to get the motor "bits" seperately, you will need:
386820 anchor 389000 field magnet 386940 motor shield 516520 inductor 601460 pair of brushes

On Ebay you can get the motor bits seperately at very good prices. Then add a lokpilot or similar. They are wa-ay better than the decoder supplied with the 60760 and not that much more expensive.
I even once bought the 60760 set just for the motor parts. The decoder is still in its package (might use it one time as a simple function decoder for rear lights or something)
