Hi! Running trains on M tracks on a wooden, or even a styroform board/structure makes A LOT of noice, especially when many trains run at the same time. I´ve tested a number of different materials and methods to reduce the unwanted noice from the trains and made this short video. Enjoy! |

Hello Martin that was a very good video and I loved the quantitative approach. What is the name of the IKEA product? I am not sure it will be down here, but then the IKEA store just outside Malmo was almost identical to the one South of me in Logan (Australia). |

IKEA item number is 901.322.61. It's called: "STOPP FILT" Rug underlay with anti-slip $14.99 <- Compare that to the same surface strips of cork at your local Märklin dealer! 165 x 235cm sheet In addition: The felt will not work under K-track for sure. It may work fine under C-track, but I have not tested it. |

Hi Martin, As usual, your video is great !! I enjoyed it a lot. As you probably know, there are also original Marklin rubber sound mufflers (sockets) for sale, that you can click under M-tracks and that work really well. Can also be used under 3600 solid center rail tracks. Marco |

Those works great, but correct me if I'm wrong, but they are no longer in production at Märklin? I kind of gave up at the thought of trying to gather 10 million pieces on ebay before starting my construction and went to IKEA instead. That made my wife both happy and surpriced too! What is the Märklin item number? |

On page 48 of Marklin catalog 1970 is mentioned that these rubber sound mufflers (item # 7171) reduce 50% of the sound, see screenshot. I guess they are no longer in the Marklin program, but they are still easy and plenty available on ebay, swap meets and mrr fairs and such, for about € 5 per 50. Marco |

Hi all, Some years ago 7171 mufflers could be found in ebay.de in piles I bought about 400-500 pcs and they were cheap. Now I am installing them to my new track. I've had them in my previous tracks too and they work very well. Regards Åke

Does 7171 fit even the rails which has the the flanged bent all the way (180 degrees, instead of 90)? |

I myself have thought of using the foam mat product you use under laminate floors (also cheapest from IKEA)... But if the felt is better, I'll reconsider... |

Well Juhan,
I tested both those alternatives, but liked the felt better. Both material reduce equal amount of noice (at least marginal difference), but the felt rubber surface really hold the track in place, whilst the plastic is even more slippery than the underlaying board.
Try a roll of both and see what you like best. Cost for both products is very low. |

It would be interesting to compare the sound damping capacities of the IKEA felt and the Marklin 7171 muffflers. |

If IKEA made this in a green it would be a huge winner. As it is the Logan branch of IKEA is probably wondering why they have a sudden rush of orders for the STOPP FILT mat. |
