One of my Mobile Stations is acting wierd. When I rotate the wheel (to change speed, select from the database etc.) the value jumps randomly. For example, if I am accelerating a loco from rest, the MS will suddenly increase the speed to full with just 1 or 2 clicks of the wheel. Same thing happens if I am scrolling through the DB for locos or any other function using the wheel. It randomly increases or decreases numbers and it has become extremely difficult to use this MS.
I have another MS which works just fine.
Problem is I can't take it back to the dealer since this dealer does not deal with Marklin anymore.
What could be the problem. Is it user fixable? If not can I send it to Marklin (I live in the US)? This is the first issue I have had with a Marklin product.

I believe this is a common problem. I know I've had (still have) it. You might try Marklin USA if your MS is still under warranty. It's very frustrating to be unable to reliably set speeds--makes for some interesting situations if multiple locomotives are in action at the same time. Good luck.

I had this problem on both my Mobile Stations.

But, after getting my upgraded Central Station back from Germany, I connected the MSs to the CS, so the MSs were upgraded from the CS. No more oproblem, neither with MS in single operation, nor with the MS connected to the CS.

If you know somebody with an upgrade Central Station...

Don't know anyone with an upgraded CS (Anyone in the Atlanta GA area who can help me out here?).
Can I send it to Marklin and have it done? If so how do I contact them. Sent an email to Marklin yesterday using the address on their website (it went to tom@marklin.com). No reply yet.

Just because your dealer says he no longer does Marklin he should still be liable if he has sold you faulty goods. If you send anything to Germany it can be months before it is returned.

Take care I like Marklin and will defend the worlds greatest model rail manufacturer.

I would suggest sending directly to the 'mothership' in Germany

I dunno? Hobby dealers are closing up left and right due to economic issues and the internet.

Gautham,

There still is one active dealer in the Atlanta area, Atlanta Trains, in Marietta. Just off Highway 92, where it crosses Sandy Plains. John, the owner, is a great guy, and I'm sure he can help you out.

However, if the encoder has gone bad, a software update may not help. The "encoder" is the mechanism under the red button. It operates much like an older rolling-ball type of computer mouse. The earlier MS had a problem with this part failing, and one of the two I own failed this way. I took it back to John, and since it was out of a starter set that I had bought from him, and he happened to have another identical set in stock, he swapped my MS with that one, and he sent my old one back to Märklin to get a replacement for the one out of the set.

DT

p.s., since I currently do electronics repair work for a living (mostly high-end audio), I'm tempted to pop open a dead MS and see how easy the part is to replace, and how difficult the part is to find. However, I am NOT about to rip open either one of my two MS, they are both working splendidly.

The dealer that I currently use (ajckids.com) suggested I contact Marklin directly at (262) 784 8854 and talk to Ken Brzenk. I did that this morning and he asked me to send the faulty MS back to Marklin with a copy of the receipt and description of the problem (it is Walthers now. New address is - Walthers, 5601 W Florist Ave, Milwaukee WI 53218). He mentioned that it is not a problem if I purchased it from a non authorized dealer.

The recovery of my MS-es from this problem by updating them to the updated CS was miraculous. I advise trying that first before sending things worldwide.
