Hi all,

I decided to put a new thread for this, like Stephen already wrote in that other top 10 locomotive thread. So what 10 Märklin locomotives (and only Märklin this time Wink) are your display case or shelf queens? = don't see much track running time if any at all. You can also put to this list your hidden treasure locomotives or your dream models. Don't only put the most expensive locomotives for their value here, but choose the ones you really like.

We can actually do like this... First five can be the locomotives you have yourself and then the other five can be your dream models.

I will start...

My top 5 display case/shelf queens. All of them are digital and all but 36159 have mfx decoders. I run them very seldom and when I do, only for some minutes or so:

1. 31860.2 White "1859" Ce 6/8III New York Central Lines Crocodile
2. 2 x 31860.1 Green "1859" SBB Ce 6/8III Crocodiles
3. 2 x 31860.3 Brown "1859" SBB Ce 6/8III Crocodiles
4. 31859.1 Green "31859" SBB Ce 6/8III Crocodile
5. 36159 Brown "3015" SBB Ce 6/8III Crocodile

Here are my top 5 dream models for display case/shelf queens:

1. Märklin CCS 800 version 1. or 2. dark green (1947)
2. Märklin CCS 800 version 3. or 4. olive green (1948-1949)
3. Märklin CCS 800 version 5. or 6. olive green (1951-1954)
4. Märklin HR 800 N version 1. (1947?-1949)
5. Märklin 32000 Platinium Crocodile (2000)

Next could be Märklin 3063 Nohab Luxemburg version 1. (1965-1967), Märklin SK 800 version?? or GS 800 version 1. (1957) from the older models. From more recent ones snowy Crocodile 39569, older black Crocodile 39564 or many weathered nice looking more detailed steam locomotives... Wub RollEyes Love

So what are yours?

Regards,
Janne

All my locos get equal track time (in theory).

I would never buy a loco if i didn't intend to run it, so I have to echo Francisco's answer and also say "NONE".

Everything I've bought so far is for practical use.

If I set out to collect single pieces they would electric locos, the quirkier the better.
If they would look at home behind a door marked 'Plant Room', then it's in.

Hi again,

It seems like this thread is not going to be very succesfull as all of you run all your locomotives. I also run all of them, but those Crocodiles listed in my previous posting will run only to stay in working condition. And when they run, it is a beautiful sight Love Drool.

I know a Märklin collector here in Finland who has well over 100 locomotives and all of them are analog. He has only a rollerstand to test run them and he has not a layout or even build any temporary layouts. So he just wants to collect Märklin and restore them. He likes to watch them in the shelfs and I can understand that kind of collectors too. Almost all of his Märklin stuff is in top mint condition and in their original old red boxes. I don't like to store my items in the boxes as I like to enjoy their looks.

If you all had some really rare older locomotives, would you still run them often? I run instead "normal" locomotives and if I had any of my dream models list I would only run them very seldom so they stay in operational condition. In my opinion they deserve to be admired Love . In the 1940's or 1950's when they were built their purpose were to be electric train toys for children or adults, but as they are rare I would not run them often anymore.

So I don't think that I am the only one who thinks like this. Remember also, that you don't have to own any of them and they can be your dream shelf queen models too. Also if you have nowadays a digital only layout and there is nice analog locomotives in your collection that will see very seldom any track time they can also be listed here. RollEyes

Regards,
Janne

Hi Janne,

There's nothing wrong with having a static collection. People collect all kinds of things, and rare and valuable trains can make an excellent display.

I personally started collecting Marklin HO when I lived in a much smaller apartment and had no hope of building a layout, but even then I would set up a floor layout occasionally and enjoy the sight of my trains running.

If I were to collect some old Marklin I would want to have some of the following in my collection:

SK800
CCS800
DL800
DT800
ST800
3025
3033

As Ray puts it; I dont buy trains I dont expect to run.
However...
As I am currently trying to shift from Epoc IV to Epoc IIIa, some very nive trains are getting "shelfed" (=put on side-tracks on the layout.)
As my consists are more or less permanent, I also use these as substitutes when other regulars must be removed for service (brushes and oil)

Currently these nice ones are on out of circulation;
DB BR121 in TEE colors
DB BR140 in beige-cyan
DB BR216 in beige-cyan
DB BR111 in beige-cyan
My very 1st locomotive; Mä 3021 (now motorless) is still present on the layout. Side by side with a Mä 3000.
The nice Mä/Brawa Köf (the first one they made) is out too, becuase it is impractical to use it on the automated layout, becuase of its low speed.
Best regards
