Your Top 10 Märklin H0 locomotives for run on your layout

Hi all, I would like to know which 10 Märklin H0 locomotives would you choose if they would be the only ones you could ever get? You can own them now or don't have to own them yet. They can also be your dream locomotives, but they have to be models Märklin has produced. And don't choose them only for their value, but for their running quality or what ever is your opinions about the best most desirable 10 models for YOU. They should be kept as originals, so not the option to upgrade them later. I want to know how also this affects your choices... I don't need super good sounds really and I like mostly metal models with good motors and running charasteristics. Here is my list: 1. Märklin 37450 DB BR 45 (I will now have this one) 2. and 3. Märklin 37565 double pack SBB Ce 6/8II green and brown (I don't have these ones) 4. Märklin 37605 DB BR VT 11.5 (I don't have this one yet, but I have confirmed to buy one ) 5. Märklin 39821 DB BR V200.1 (I will soon have this one) 6. Märklin 39579 DB BR E103 (I have this one) 7. Märklin 37186 K.Bay.Sts.B. BR S 3/6 (I have this one) 8. Märklin 39190 DB BR E19 (I have this one) 9. Märklin 37967 K.Bay.Sts.B. BR Gt 2 x 4/4 (I have this one) 10. Märklin 37953 DB BR 03 140 (I have this one) Very hard to limit my choices to only ten, but many compromises has to be taken if only ten locomotives has to be chosen. I will try to get those locomotives of my list which I don't have in the future. In reality there are so many nice models from many countries that there is many more choises. So my collection will get many other members, but these locomotives I would take of all if only ten would be the limit... Regards, Janne Edited by user 28 February 2014 11:23:00(UTC)
| Reason: Added info as 37450 has arrived and confirmed to buy 37605... |

Great topic Janne! I like your ten choices very much. Some of mine are similar to yours, with perhaps different numbers. Here are my top 10: 1. Br 03.10 streamlined (I have the 37912 in red) 2. Wurttemberg 'C' (I have 34112 with Olympic rings) 3. Baden IV h (I have 39023 in blue) 4. Bavarian S3/6 (I have 37187 in DB black) 5. Bavarian B VI (I have the 37972 in DRG black) 6. Borsig Br53 (I have 3702 in black) 7. Wurttemberg 'K' (I have 37059 in blue/grey) 8. Bavarian Gt 2X4/4 (I have 3796 in DRG black) 9. DB Br194 (I have the 3422 in blue/cream) 10. SBB crocodile Ce 6/8 (I have the 39563 in green) If I were allowed up to 20 I would include some more steamers, perhaps tank engines, and some more electrics and a couple of Diesels and railcars. I have also decided to only count those I already own, otherwise the choice becomes too dificult by far! |

Oohhh - this is a tough one... Will have to think about this for a while... There are so much "mental" options, you may eg even want to run one of your childhood loks... |

Hi and good idea for a thread, Janne. I've decided to choose 5 analogue Loks
and 5 digital Loks. Peter
Analogue:
1. 3012 My old 10000 SNCF electric. I don't run it very often but to me she's a class act and so heavy and strong.
2. 3021 DB V200 Classic Märklin '60s Diesel.
3. 3048 DB BR01 A true Märklin treasure to me.
4. 3022 DB E94 I love my German Crocs.
5. 3047 DB BR44 German/Märklin power at its best.
Digital:
1. 39560 SBB Ce6/8 Famous Swiss Croc. I love her even more now that I've gone digital too.
2. 39500 DB E50 German freight Lok with great sounds.
3. 39235 DB BR23 Favorite, Peter's mid-sized Beauty. ♥
4. 39643 DB BR64 Great little puller with super sounds. This Lok alone makes me glad I'm finally digital.
5. 37957 DB BR03 New model with wonderful up-to-date super detail.

Which is almost my total loco count anyway. Never had Marklin prior to 2005. And I am not particularly fascinated by disease-els.

How can I decide from over 200 locos which is my favorite one. Ah, no foreign manufacturers, no conversions, what a pity. well this shrinks it down to "0".
sorry to disappoint you all.

John Hey John, we know you like to improve your locos, but why don't you tell us your favourite ten Marklin locos anyway, even if you have modified them? I know I've seen lots of nice locos in your photos! |

Great topic, Janne, but as our WebMaster I need a time-out.
Basically I like everything from the 40's to the 60's. Old electric, diesel and big steamers. But I find it difficult t o select 10 from my 140 locomotive, as so not buy locomotive I son't like.
My first rough selection: Swiss crocodilles Norwegian Di3 Diesels Norwegian 63a steamers big German steamers. |

Good question... I am essentially SBB /BLS oriented (but not limited to..) So my top 10 Märklin locos (I have several copies/variations of most of them ) and why...) SBB Ce 6/8 III (3356 and so on, including the C-Sinusversion) most spectacular! SBB Ae 6/6 (Best puller, reliable, elegant, a staple in SBB history: I have 18 copies!! ) Re 460 (modern, smooth, sexy: I have also 18 copies) Re 4/4 II (workhorse, nimble, a lean athlet, universal from TEE to freighters) Re 465 (eye catcher!) Re 485/ DB BR 185 (inexpensive, powerful, dependable) Union Pacific "Mikado" 2-8-2 steamer (IMHO best steam loco design ever by Märklin, pretty and accurate , powerful) F7 (many variations thereof ,just because I like its style and because I love these loooooong US trains anyways) E17 (Insider lok. Nice technical solutions, runs beautifully, smooth and silent mechanism) E50 (nicest electic freight loco, powerful, smooth, a bit retro, spectaculat at the point of a very long train) And yes, these were "good enough" out of the box, no changes or upgrades Cheers |

Like trying to pick a favorite child. While I have no opinion there, the kids will say differently. As all are either conversions or LokSound or LokPi upgrades, then I am out. But I will say my favorite is 3048. It has been with me since that first Christmas Eve. It has been digitalized first with a 6080 in the mid '80s and again two years ago with a LoPi V4. |
Matt Era 3 DB lokos, coaches and freight cars from across Europe But I do have the obligatory (six) SBB Krocs ECoS 50200, all FX and MFX decoders replaced with ESU V4s, operated in DCC-RailCom+ with ABC brake control. With the exception of the passenger wagens with Marklin current conducting couplers, all close couplers have been replaced with Roco 40397. |

Not easy!!! 1- 37455 2- 37565 and 26730 Crocs 3- Ks 4- Cs 5- BR96/Gt 2x4/4 II like 37964, 37967 and 37968 (I don't have the 37960 or 37959... but they would be great) 6- 37605 VT11.5 7- RAm 39700 8- E18 (3768) and E19 (39192) 9- BR03.10 streamlined (grey and red) 10- Any of the new steamers (BR94, BR39, BR50, BR03.10, BR01). Maybe of all these I prefer the BR50 11- E94 39221 Although it is not Märklin, I like too much Brawa S2/6s and S9s, so I must mention it here! I don't have because I was doing more Ep. I, but I think I will like a lot: V200 Ep III or IV E03 Ep. III or BR103 Ep. IV NOHABs BR58 (I think I will go for an Ep. I when it comes out) Edited by user 20 February 2014 10:00:00(UTC)

I have made the choice to run Dutch passenger trains, and have restricted myself to buy Marklin only. 37781 - NS ICE-3M 39700 - RAm TEE 1 37500 - Northlander 37421 - Koploper 37269 - NS 1773 37127 - NS 1203 Actually, I have the 5 on top, the NS 1203 has been pre-ordered. :) To get to 10, Marklin will have to bring out some new models, to mind come: Mat '54 (Hondekop) DE-3 (Plan U) DD Regiorunner (VIRM) Sprinter Lighttrain (SLT) Edited by user 22 February 2014 02:27:37(UTC)

Hi, CE 800 E63 is electric locomotive, not a diesel. Maybe a mistake? Regards, Janne Thank you, Janne, I corrected it. I had a few different choices I had to edit and choose from and I missed the diesel typo. Great topic and I have been able to look up some nice models because of it. Cheers, Tim |

This is a tricky one. First I believe my #1 favorite is the E94/194/254/1020, but which one is the number one favorite of all the versions I have ranging from DRG, DB, DR, ÖBB and MWB in various liveries. So I'll just put that as #1 and there will be the same for many of the others where I also have many livery versions.
1. E94/194/DR 254/ÖBB 1020/MWB 1020 2. E03/103 3. DSB My/DSB Mx 4. E10/110 5. E19 6. V200.0/220 7. 218 8. SNCF CC401/SNCB NMBS 18 9. 3048 BR 01 10. 120
I don't have enough experience running my SJ Dm3 or NSB El 12 to decide whether any of them should go on the list.

Ha... Difficult. I already did that in the 80´es and 90´es. -Only to find out later in the 2000´es that I wanted something else. So I now have a "Perfect" collection of Epoc 4 trains, while I now dream of Epoc IIIa rolling stock. One has to be careful for what one wishes for! ;-)
I would just like to have a nice collection of Epoc 3 trains. They dont have to be very special trains; i´m very happy with the "most commmons". But as "wishing" is free (at least in the beginning)... (in no particular order)
E141 (green and blue ones) E144 E110 (blue -and it´s brother E140 in green) E103.0 (one row of ventilation grills) BR50 BR03 BR18.4 with epoc 2 Rheingold waggons as museum train V260 with TELEX V212 VT11.5
(I already have half of the machines listed! ;-) )

Regards, Janne Janne, With the greatest of respect, but how can you rate something you haven't tried or don't have. I do have the 37450, but as it, my one anyway, always crabs down the track, I cannot rate it as best, or even that it makes my top 10, but I'll have a think about what I've got for this list. Just for all the 37455 45.010 3 pole motor non fans, I will say that my copy of that one does at least track straight and true on the rails, even if it's operating qualities leave a bit to be desired, but I digress !? My faves, ofF the top of my head are; 39050 05.03 (SDS) 37605 VT11.5 (5 Pole mit Balls) great slow running sounds ! 39641 64.241 DRG (SDS) 39646 64.304 DB (SDS) This is a non sounds one, I bought with an idea of installing an ESU V4M4 decoder and Telex. It rolls along so slowly on SS1 that you can count the sleepers till you fall asleep 39800 V200.021 (CCS) Because of an assembly defect, it has an ESU V3M4 decoder and runs superbly and has a great menu of the almost correct operating sounds 39021 Baden IVh ERA I (SDS) 37030 P38 DB (BSA) 37113 Wurt C Green KwStsE (BSA) 39080 VT.08 Rail Car DB (CCS) 39011 01.128 DRG (SDS) I have actually bumped a few SDS & CCS Loks off this list not too mention a few BSA's and 5 Pole faves Glossary; SDS; Soft Drive C Sine CSS; Compact C Sine 5 Pole Mit Balls; see: http://www.maerklin.de/p...SetNew=1&bShowLogo=0BSA; Bell Shaped Armature |

Hi Glen, You wrote: "Janne, With the greatest of respect, but how can you rate something you haven't tried or don't have." This is simply because I already know that they are very well running full metal quality models. Remember that I wrote that you don't have to own them yet or they can also be your dream models. So my dream models have been for a long time 37450 DB BR 45 020 and 37605 DB VT 11.5 TEE. I have now 37450 and I like it very much. I actually like also generally BR 45 very much and I might add some more of them in my Collection later. And why not 37455 too with great sounds? I don't have a problem with it's motor if the mfx decoder runs it smoothly. There is no reason to blame the motor if decoder causes running problems in some locomotives. I think this 37455 is not one of them and does not have any running problems. I don't use signals to cut off track current, so for me there is no problems with the newer versions sudden stopping either. It will stop nicely with braking delay anyway and this is how I would use it then. I think that there is no reason why 37605 could not get much satisfaction? Full metal, two motors with ball bearings, interior lights, nice looks, great colors, smooth running and great sounds. Even without the train extension 43115 must be a great model . I will later buy this extension too. I don't have the green and brown 37565 SBB Crocodiles, but I know exactly how they will run and sound as I have the black version 37567 with similar design and sounds. It runs so well and quiet and have great sounds. I also enjoy to watch the side rods with these SBB Ce 6/8II models as they have different (better in my opinion) looking parts than SBB Ce 6/8III. Do you need more reasons why just these models are the ones? As you can see they are my dream models and I will try to make my dreams come true. Cheers, Janne |

I have the 37455 and wish I had the 37453 instead, specially since I passed on one (whilst awaiting the 37455), it sold for a little over $NZ400.00 Whatever the cause, I don't think the 37455's running qualities, are in keeping with it's MHI status and price. I could not recommend the 37605 more highly tho, a superb model and even it's quirky old sound generator does a credible job and emitts noise from both power units The deisel sounds are quite spine tingling at crawling speeds I also have the 37606 and it is MFX with more sounds but of course is the Gas Turbine model. A fun model but not an essential like the 37605 |
