Hi Martin,

Sorry have not tried that stuff. Have used other brands of smoke oil with out problems.
My last oil was a Model Power Brand, and completely odourless & worked really well. But can not get locally any more.
Not keen on the Marklin smoke oil, as it has quite an obvious odour.
I have just ordered some Seuthe smoke oil to try. (probably what Marklin use)

Only thing I suggest is see if you can get a sample from the supplier to try. In theory, if it is using a heating element to generate the smoke, it should work.

You can buy this by Mega Steam, Mega Steam
There are a whole lot of different scents you can get, coal, diesel, pine etc, etc. See there Home page here, Mega Steam Home page
There are two stores in Ontario that sell it, according to the web site.

Best of luck.

Regards,
Brian.

Seuthe recommend only use allowed smoke fluied for theirs smoke generator.
I use Viessmanns smoke fluied, which are better than Seuthe own fluied.
It don´t harms against steam locomotivs body around chimney.

I had tryed one time a fluid from smoke machines, but didn't worked very well -- or better saying, didn't worked at all... was a brand with artificial colors and scents... too much useless chemicals for the purpose I need.

I'm searching for a sample of another brand, without those "extra" chemicals...

Meanwhile, I only use Märklin's fluid.

Do anyone know the formula of Märklin/Seuthe fluids?

Cheers,

Walter

If it is any help the data sheet that comes with the Märklin smoke fluid says:
"Nach jeder Anwendung Flasche wieder mit kindersicherem Verschluss verschließen. Enthält n- und i- Alkane"
or the official english translation:
"After each use, seal the bottle with a childproof cap. Contains n and i paraffin compounds"

Alkanes have the formula C(n) H(2n+2). Methane is a simple alkane CH4, ethane C2H6, propane C3H8, butane C4H10 etc. I must remember Year 11/Form 5 Chemistry - I was 2nd in class!) They would have to be longer chain alkanes that are liquid at room temperature, like pentane C5H12 and up if that is the case.

I'm at working there as a computer tech at the moment, I'll try to talk nicely to a chemistry teacher tomorrow.

Hi all,

"SR24" which is sold as a cleaning detergent for model-railways in Germany also works as smoke-fluid. It is much cheaper (~12,00 EUR / litre + p/p) on Ebay-Germany but the SEUTHE -"smoke" looks better. If I only would use it for "smoking" one litre would last at least 97 years here. ;-)

Regards

Markus

I spoke to a friend of mine (who was 1st in Chemistry at school) who pretty much said the same things as I did.

I went and spoke to a chemistry teacher today who said it would make sense for it to contain alkanes to smoke.
However she said that it didn't really smell strong enough to contain only alkanes (they have tend to have a distinctive door, methane, propane, butane etc) however alkanes are non polar and therefore don't really water down. It was between classes and only for about 2 minutes so we will investigate it further next week.

There is another teacher with a PhD in organic chemistry. I'll also have a chat to him.

Simply because it smells like Parafin, & confirmed by my late Father some years ago who had a parafin fueled device many years before, I always believed it is a parafin based fluid with aditives.
Suethe make the fluid, and smokers for Marklin.
I am half way thru a 250ml bottle of Suethe oil that I have had for at least six years ! it has some medium brown sediment at the bottom now !
In spite of the smell, which I don't find unpleasant, I don't believe Marklin or Suethe would market the product if it was harmful !

I have a friend who uses Suethe smokers in his 1/144 scale USS Missouri. He adds Citronella oil to the mix to improve the smoke AND it keeps the mosquitoes away too.. LOL
