Today was apparently the final day of operation for the remaining Ae 6/6 of the SBB. At the end of the shift, the loks will be moved to Däniken RB. I do not know if they will be kept as reserve or whether they will be scrapped and salvaged.
By next week, the only Ae 6/6 still operating will be the units that have been kept as historical loks.
This impressive lok was the one that got me hooked on Swiss trains.
It is sad to see this happen. The current new locomotives don't have the appearance and character of the classic loks.

The Ae 6/6 will live on in our Hag, Maerklin, Roco, Fleischmann, Kleinbahn, Lima and other models.

Agree, one of the iconic Swiss locomotives, along with the Re 4/4 II that started my Marklin Swiss collection.

I was lucky enough to see a couple in operation in Switzerland, but not at close quarter.

All good things must come to an end. The locos will be missed, but at least enthusiasts will still be able to see these beautiful machines on preserved trains.

Its funny to phrase it this way, but the locomotive has some sentimental attachment for me as well. Its the first swiss locomotive I saw in real life after 15+ years of dreaming about swiss trains. In green, duly parked in the yard at Chiasso as I was on the Cisalpino form Milan-Zurich. (or maybe it was lugano)

A favorite marklin model not only for looks but performance as well, both new tooling and the old 3050.

BUT, the good news is SBB historic knows this and is keeping several in good working order :)

This was my first FLEISCHMANN Lok when I was in high school in the '60s.
That was when I ran dc trains.

After moving to Switzerland with my family in 1971, I was extremely delighted to find that the SOB line between Pfaeffikon SZ and Arth-Goldau ran by our new house about 50m down the hill. It was amazing as a 9 year old to watch the green/beige SOB and BT BDe 4/4 Pendelzug trains go by. Even better was the occasional SBB BDe 4/4 with it's lightsteel consist. I also discovered that walking down the hill from the town of Wollerau brought me to the shore of the Lake of Zurich and the SBB Schnellzug trains mainly with Re 4/4II and Ae 4/7 locomotives. When we were in Zurich, a visit to the Hauptbahnhof was a must, along with Franz Carl Weber, Jelmoli and Moby Dick Pizzeria.
It was at Zurich HB where I first saw a real Ae 6/6 and this led me to choose a Maerklin 3050 as my birthday present a few months later.
The other loks that I wanted were the Re 4/4II TEE (did not exist in model) and the TEE Gottardo (which also did not exist in HO). My brother chose the 3071 RAm because it was the same colour as the Gottardo. I think that we saw the RAm once during our time in Switzerland. I saw it again later arriving at Union Station in Toronto around 1981.
Today also marks the end of the SBB participation in the Voralpen Express trains. There will no longer be a consist pulled by a SBB Re 4/4II. The consists will now be composed of either SOB Re 446, Re 456 or RBDe 561 (renumbered SOB NPZ units) at either end of the consist. It has already been a few years since the BDe 4/4 (576) were replaced by the Flirt type trainsets, but I still cherish the memories of those green/beige consists.

It's sad to see such an iconic locomotive having to go. But when the Ae 6/6 were new, they also replaced many older locomotives. Maintenance gets more extensive and operation more expensive as the locomotives "grow" older. Time does not stand still, and the Ae 6/6 were nop exception of the rule. They were an early 1950s' design. I.e. many spare parts for these old locomotives are no longer available and have to be re-produced as single items.

Propably, for the railfans of the 1950s, the Ae 6/6 as well did not have the appearance and character of the older locomotives they replaced back then. Railfans often dislike new rolling stock. They disliked railbusses for replacing uneconomical steam trains on brach lines. But when the days of railbusses were numbered and modern low-floor railcars appeared to replace them, these previously disliked items suddenly became an object of desire.

At least, this class could remain in service for 61 years. Not many locomotives are reaching such a long time in revenue service. Think of the (maybe even more iconic) DB BR 103, which have been withdrawn after only half of that time.

Ae 6/6 is one of my favorite electric locos. Swiss Crocodiles, German E 18 and E 19 and much newer E 103 are my other favorite electric locos.

I'm still glad that we can all still see these locos as restored museum locos, if not else. What I really feel sad for is those loco types which has all broken and not left even single one to future generations = restored for museum locos. This is the case with DRG rail Zeppelin and surely many other loco types too. Then we have to watch old films or see pictures of them only.

Ae 6/6 has very beautiful shape and it was very powerful loco when it came in service. Thank god they save some of them. ThumpUp

My Ae 6/6 is one of my favorite Marklin loks. It started as a 3338 (with the crest of the city Bern) that I picked up second hand. With Mike C's help (and Harlaar Trains in Amsterdam) I was able to order new pantographs and clear windows (instead of tinted green). I upgraded it to a 5* motor and recently installed a Loksound 4.0.

It runs smooth and sounds awesome!!!BigGrin

I agree that the Ae6/6 is a great locomotive.

I am a little bit sad, too, and angry with myself. some years ago we drove under a railway bridge next to Dübendorf station. on the bridge, standing still, perfect for s photo, the 11.425. my camera was not ready (I was not driving). so before I was ready to shoot, it drove off. I cannot repeat the words flying through my head at that time.

Marklin made quite a few of them in green and red, some only came in sets, does some body perhaps have a list of locomotive numbers, 11xxx that were produced. I have in my collection nine green (11414, 11445, 11439, 11428, 11403, 11404, 11409, 11437 and 11453) and and eight red one's (11463, 11422, 11520, one with no number, 11432, 11425, 11426 and 11429)
Do more numbers exist?
