But I wondered if perhaps he's a little less confident in putting his modelling skills out there than his entertaining skills? - not that he would have anything to be ashamed of but he would not be the first modeler to feel their work was not up to public scrutiny or at least that of fellow modelers. A google search give plenty of images including some of MR covers and it looks impressive to me. Interesting he feels more prestige from Model Railroader than Rolling Stone. Perhaps Märklin should start sending him a complimentary Insider just to whet his appetite. I'd ask if anyone has ever seen it but of course, if you had, you'd be sworn to secrecy anyway  Steve |

There was an article in Model Railroader magazine a few years ago about Rod's layout, so it's not like he's never gone public on it before.
Unfortunately I was never able to score a copy of the article, maybe someone has it and can scan it - it has been discussed in the forum before.

I tried typing "rod stewart model railway" into google images and got all kinds of pictures of it. Looks like people have already scanned the pictures out of the Model Railroader article.

When the original article in the Model Railroader appeared and was reported in various newspapers, I got the feeling on reading some of the articles that the journalists would have loved to make their usual condescending remarks about playing with toy trains but, given the status of Rod Stewart, could not do so. Perhaps this is one reason why he wants to keep the press at bay.

The article in the Model Railroader about Rod Stewart' layout was published in the issue of December 2010. Called "Rod Stewart's Three Rivers City", the article describes at length an impressive 23 x 124-foot HO layout. The least I can say is that Stewart is a highly skilled modeller and that he has no reason at all to feel less confident in his modelling skills than his rock star abilities. Thanks for the article. I have seen pieces before, but it's a pretty impressive layout, not just in size but also in detail and design. I guess he has a lot of time in hotels to build models! I would love to see the wiring for this, it must be tremendous. Too bad there are no photos of the sections outside of the city. I do like the massive staging area, I wonder if that room is full of display cabinets?

Pierre Thanks Pierre for having that PDF file available. Never having seen Stewarts layout before, I can only say that I am impressed. I can identify with Rod, too. I thought I was the only madman in the world to take Faller, Kibri and other kits with me when I had to spend weeks in hotel/motel rooms as part of my job. Unlike Rod however, I disposed all of my marvellous structures (about 100) including bridges because: 1. I had no space for a layout that would take them all 2. Ran out of storage room for the dozens of boxes in which they were packed. I gave away most of them to local model railway clubs, while about 5 of them found room on my layout. At least they are giving pleasure still. regards Kimball |

A few people might even agree with you, but that is what is modelled on the layout and it is VERY well done in my opinion  No need to shoot the messenger there  I would have thought you for one would like Rod's layout because he has "dirtied" (weathered) everything very well and in great detail  Goofy  |

Bob M. Probably the truth. Frank Sinatra had a large collection of Lionel trains. I don't know if that included a large layout, but there probably was something. If some writer had made snarky remarks about Sinatra and his toy trains, they might have got a one way ride out into the deserts of southern Nevada.

When I was in the US 8 years ago, after just having been in Las Vagas, I set up my cousins Lionel track with an F7 on it in their office which has a round the wall desk in their Sedona Az home, and he mentioned that Sinatra had had a Lionel Layout in Vegas ! edit; I see in the Wiki List of "Rail Transport Modellers" That Frank Sinatra is on the list, also as we've seen in a thread on this forum IIRC that Neil Young is a part owner of Lionel Trains !! |
