Well - back to topic. Received that starter set today and did a short test run on my train room's floor:

UserPostedImage

Frankly, this is one very nice set. Overall craftsmanship is very good and everything looks neat,
also the - many - plastic parts seem almost unbreakable [:p]

Quality of the brass track is excellent - it should survive many years of hard duty with kids !
And the little Stainz Steamer is one smooth & silent runner - even her engine sounds realistic
thank a big 2-inch speaker under the roof ...
The only thing I did change was the cars' wheel sets - from plastic to metal.

A little hint for potential G-Scale buyers - choose your LGB with sound only!
Why? We all know a heavy-metal MARKLIN sounds great by herself - even w/o any processor ...
Not so the all-plastic LGBs though their electronic chuff-chuff is just nice Smile
But when you shut that off you get a ... shaver [xx(]

You can also shut-off loco power completely - nice detail for parking engines on your analog layout [^]
No complaints whatsoever with this cute set. And for €240 it's a true bargain Smile

Good to hear John, I always though LGB was the only firm left (except Marklin) that managed to do start sets without sacrificing quality!

Hello John.

Just found some more LGB pictures in my archive, so I backwards-googled them.

German, but with lots of nice pictures, one with nice weathered LGB,
and one with informative pics of tracklaying in the garden. Here's the links:

Per.

P.S. Just learnt on Google, that LGB also means "Laser Guided Bomb". Take care! biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Or, have a look: http://www.communigate.c.../brad/lgbnet/page4.phtml Take even more care! biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

P.S. John, please look in NMR/train music. Now I got it! wink

Hi John. I can't link you directly to this one, but give it a try.

http://www.tulip.dk/

Click on the painting or "klik her"

On the next page, click on the same painting or "Logefilm"

It gives you 3 choices, click on "Herrefrokosten"

It's a Danish commercial involving LGB trains and food!

Small in size, and imposible to explain, give it a try.

My wife and I stopped at the train store on our way home last night (Nicholas Smith in Broomall, PA) and looked at the LGB stuff. She would like one for the little garden around her koi pond. There were so many great looking starter sets that she couldn't make up her mind, so we got nothing yet. Looks very interesting. A question: I assume that the power option that comes with it is DC. What are my options for 1) digital control, and 2) mobile control? Is there a mobile control option without digital?

Ron: Yep, it's DC (what else) - back to roots, again Cool. And there's a myriad of starter sets and controllers to choose from.
Nice touch - you have engine sound already with that standard analog controller from the starter sets Smile

Since I won't do that much of big scale work in the garden I never bothered with LGB's DCC options - but there oughta be many. Just have a look at their site ...

Have fun,
John

Per: We're talking about a LITTLE fish pond! That monster would need my whole back yard (1 1/2 acres) Hmmmmm. That would be a great display for the BB...about a 50 meter parade track. (My wife would kill me...this is HER layout..Must keep reminding myself...) Smile

I'm also interested in doing a small outdoor loop, maybe this summer.
I'm dissappointed to hear about the low ranking of the bachmann trains. I really like the geared locomotives, like the shay and climax, which machmann makes, and now they have a D+RGW locomotive like used in Durango, CO. I'm sure its possible to remotor these things, and do other upgrades. I don't have any of these, but would still like to get them despite the low opinion by some
Kalmbach's Garden Railways magazine occasionally is pretty good for some ideas, as well as lots of ads.
this is a nice magazine too, that covers some nice subjects suitable for outdoor rail roads, but the magazine itself is all scales
http://www.ngslgazette.com/issue.htm

also a big fan of the thompson, just a little out of my price range right now (the 1928 models with the cutts compensators start at around $19000, the M1 - WW2 types not quite half that).
I haven't seen the movie Bonnie and Clyde, but Clyde Barrow was a big fan of another fine piece of machinery, the 1918 BAR (with cut down stock and barrel). its possible to own either, in many areas of the US, as long as you're on good terms with law enforcement and the local police, and you buy an expensive stamp that most stamp collectors will never own. and most important - a lot of $$$.

jonquinn,Bachmann has two quality levels in its locomotives. The newer 1:20.3 scale loco's like the shay are better quality than the 4-6-0 annie in its starter sets. Also like you mention, the lower quality entry level Bachmanns can be repowered and then are very good runners.

That little Furka Oberalp electric loco is fitted with a working rack drive system - add the rack to your line and it'll climb things that adhesion-only locos can't cope with. They will run quite happily on adhesion-worked lines too.

Only snag is that used examples may well have been overloaded in the past. Not a problem normally as the wheels would spin, but with the rack drive engaged it can't slip, so the motor stalls or the gears get damaged. Keep the trains short and it should be fine.

Other snag is that LGB have never made an accurate coach to match it - the only true FO examples they offer are the type seen in the first photo which are strictly speaking too modern for this little boxcab. I'd be inclined to use any of the vintage Swiss four and six wheelers instead - not accurate but they would look the part.
