Today Dutch railways NS have announced they will buy Bombardier Traxx locomotives for the Fyra service between Amsterdam and Brussels.
Quantity of the German made electric loco's has not been disclosed.
Current electric traction with servicespeed of 160 km/h is hired and will be returned to owners.
It would seem NS have departed from the idea that highspeed trains should run at 250 km/h.

There are Bombardier Traxx with max speed of 140, 160 and possibly as high as 200 kph. The Siemens Eurosprinter has a max speed of 230 kph.
Currently, the NS have leased a number of Class 186. Are the new loks to be from this series or will they be adapted for higher speeds?

The coaches used will be the NS and SNCB coaches of the Intercity type (IC-R) as well as UIC-Z rolling stock leased from the OBB as a stop gap pending the arrival of the Ansaldo-Breda trainsets. It is not known whether the lease of the former Eurofima and similar coaches from the OBB will be extended now that the AB trainset order has been cancelled.

There was an interesting comment on this lok order today at www.railcolor.net regarding the current permissions for Traxx loks in NL/BE and what impact this will have on services and whether additional testing amd permission will be required.

LSM has released the Fyra coaches in 1/87: http://www.treinmodel.nl...uigen-B-end-+-A-+-A.html

Maerklin has announced models of the former OBB coaches in 1/100 with NS markings for 2013.
Roco and ACME had both announced such models in 1/87. I understand that Roco may have cancelled their planned models.

The only thing i can say is that information given to date is limited.
NS are very much in a hurry to construct a new service before 1st October 2013.
Service speed 160 km/h is fine with me,the Fyra has only a few stops on special high speed track.
Added advantage is that the regular track can be used more intensely for slower local trains.
Will keep an eye on it.

Paul.

AFAIK the Traxx are not homologated for the routes into Belgium. This will require some cooperation between SNCB, NS and the Dutch and Belgian railway networks

SNCB/NMBS have TRAXX locomotives of their own, so the only issue could be the train security system (if that high-speed line uses a security system the TRAXX locos are not yet approved for).

Faster TRAXX locos for higher speeds would require new certifications - and those can take years.

Both NS and NMBS are very much in a hurry to start the "New"Fyra service.
At least NS have full support of our national government to push paper barriers aside.
Yesterday permission was given to ignore EC competition rules and go straight ahead for the TRAXX loco's.
When emergency rules decision making can go fast.

Presently the name Fyra has a negative sound for the public.
Fyra currently stands for either not running or running at a lazy pace in the eyes of the public.
I would not be surprised if the name would be revised and the coaches repainted.
I find the current colors horrible anyway.

The current Fyra coaches are not fit for 200 km/h.
