Congratulations!

Compare with the good old Maerklin 3046 from the sixties:

Brian,

Welcome to the worlds best MRR forum! Nice choice to have an black SNCF French beauty ThumpUp . I collect French steamers, but I don't have this new one yet. And no 3046 either.

If you want to find more nice French beauties here is some (but without sound and Mfx):

Digital and Delta: 37552 (040 D 120), 34157 (150 Y 17), 34131 (040 TC 962) and 3413 (131 TA 3).

Analog: 3414 (150 Z 2217), 3083 (ETAT 231-981), 3317 (231 995), 3107 (232 TC 414) and 3117 (weathered 232 TC 423).

These are my French steamers. My 3414 is digitalised, but I will soon get an analog original 3414 also.

I really like French steamers that are black or green.

Cheers,
Janne
Märklin H0 digital layout. I have analog and digital H0 Collection. Rolling stock mostly from era I, II, III and IV. Märklin 1 gauge beginner.

Brian,

Here a copy of a scan from the Maerklin 1968 catalogue, showing the 3046 in SCNF colors and the 3045 in DSB colors.
The SCNF version has the same operating number as your newer version of the monster.
Both loco's are rare nowadays and attract high prices on internet.
Note the Danish version has one headlamp missing which complies with the prototype.
Both loco's were based on the German DB 3047 Baureihe 44,of which i recently purchased the 3108 Jubilee version.

Hi Paul thanks for sharing these amazing catalogs. Interesting how this first model was manufactured pre war in 1938 so really how successful this 2-10-0 configuration was. I have also never seen a missing head lamp like that looks like a ladder in its place. Also fascinates me why one would have no smoke deflectors on the 3046 any idea why this is? Such beautiful locos!

Dan many thanks for your feedback let me know when you receive your loco. I would be very interested in that link.

Many thanks

Brian, smoke deflectors many times were omitted to save materials!
The German series 52 Kriegslokomotive ("War locomotive") at the end did not have "Elephant ears" just to save costly material!
Together with a number of other steamer series the DB series 44 was outphased in the mid seventies only.
The French and Danish versions are in fact German series 44 steamers left behind after May 1945.

Cheers,
Paul.

Hi Paul very interesting, thanks for the info. Wonder if one can mimic the impact of smoke deflectors on and off on the actual model at full speed? Would be intersting to see if one can recreate the effect.

Brian,

As a matter of fact a larger proportion of all steam locomotives did not have smoke deflectors at all, even before WW2.
It would seem to have been a matter of personal taste of the designers rather than a logical design feature.
Even within a German steamer series you can find both versions, even before WW2.
See for example Maerklin 3091 (no ears) versus Maerklin 3099 (with ears).
Interesting stuff.

Hi Paul,

Interesting that its a case of design over function. I have a definite preference - a loco without deflectors which shows off the boiler in its entirety. I see the 3091/99 is a passenger class loco, what a beauty!

Brian, welcome to the forum, I had one of these locos and sold it (regret) but before selling it I've converted it to digital (high efficiency motor), sound decoder and added a telex coupling, leds front and rear and gearlight.

Turbulences that occur at higher speeds can, in connection with wind from the side, block the sight of the engineer as the smoke does not go upwards, but is pulled down by the turbulences.

The smoke deflectors direct the airflow to prevent this problem.

As a rule of thumb, smoke deflectors were used for locomotives that can go at least 80 km/h. But many were made without smoke deflectors. Therefore many DB locos received the small Witte deflectors after the war - either replacing the larger Wagner deflectors or as their first deflectors.

Tom

Brian,

The P8,later Baureihe 38,is one of the most famous German steam loco's.
Maerklin made a number of different versions, including a Danish and Belgian version!
The P8/Br38 was mainly used for passenger traffic but was also used for regional freight,a perfect loco for every layout!
I have two of them in my collection.

Brian,

May i recommend a truly fantastic internet site: www.osterthun.com .

On the right hand side of the first page there is 8.The Picture Book,it is listing almost all German steamloco's in scale 1/87 (H0) from Maerklin and other brandnames.
The photographs are simply superb!
Mr.Osterthun has wisely blocked the pictures against duplication, you cannot print the pictures.
The site holds a real danger: one is tempted to get very greedy seeing all these beauties!
Even when owning a number of steamers like i do the pictures make me hungry for some more to buy!
Enjoy,and watch your bankaccount!

Paul.

Just not from the website but you can: function print screen - Fn-Prt sc then paste this into Paint. Then from there you can copy to word or powerpoint and create a nice printable copy Woot

You can also right click on an image and get a menu where you can chose "Save Image As ..". Then chose a spot to store it and it will download the .jpg. I did it with a couple of the photos last night ...
