Good Day--hoping you can help suggest how to fix the sound in this unit:

Here is the situation:

A) No dealers anywhere around here--I'm somewhat on my own
B) Santa brought this Marklin 37623 (Milwaukee A+B F7) to the wee-one...we ran it for about a month (maybe 15 or 20 hours)...sound worked great 'till yesterday.
C) We are running on M-Track using CS-2
D) Yesterday, unit's sound started "sounding strange"; loco ran fine, but unit made "machine gun sounds"..for a few minutes--like something was going crazy-- then quit making sound altogether.
E) if the unit is sitting still--stationary---you can hear a barley audible buzzing-hum....very faint.
F) unit sound functions (which were were minimal) doesn't respond to CS-2
G) units only other function, the headlight, is still controllable by CS-2
H) unit runs great---just no sound.
j) any other unit runs great using same CS-2.

Any ideas how to fix this?

I took the tops of the A + B units---not too many wires inside--looks like 4 wires going from sound card to the speaker
[off topic--gosh---what a tiny motor! We can't believe this little tiny motor can pull such a load!]

Regards,

Boxcab

The 37623 was released in 2000/2001. You said that Santa brought it to your child. Did Santa acquire it from a dealer or was it acquired second hand (eBay private, swap meet, etc)?
If it was bought from a dealer and still had an active warranty, you should consult that dealer.

I could not find the exploded view diagram for this locomotive. I will try to see if I can find more info later tonight.

I have this loco, it is quite rare, even more rare are the matching tin plate box cars and caboose.

I will Look out the manual, but to be honest it would seem that the sound decoder is shot,
A real shame.

Best bet would be to have a dealer fit a new MSD decoder and download the F7 file.
It is going to need a new loudspeaker too. Most of the B Unit is filled with a plastic echo chamber for the loudspeaker.

As Mike said, do you have a warranty?

Clarification as requested: This loco was purchased on EBay.
I have no gripe with the seller whatsoever.

There was no long-term guarantee expected on my part--I think they presented the item fairly.

The item worked fine when I received it... I have no idea why it fried.

Some unscrupulous sellers might put an item on sale as soon as they notice an onset of a problem, thereby getting rid of the item before it becomes a problem.
It is also possible that the item was in perfect condition, but that a problem has developed since the acquisition.

This post describes an issue that another member had with his 37622 and his solution:

https://www.marklin-user...-to-6021-controller.aspx

I don't know if the internals of your 37623 are the same as the earlier 37622.

As I stated, I could not find much in the way of spare parts or exploded diagram for your lok. If you have the instructions, there should be a parts list and diagram inside the manual. You can then search the part numbers at Maerklin.de or Walthers.com or on Google to see if they are available.

In CA (SF area), there is a former member named Cees Feith who may be able to assist you. He can be found in Burlingame, CA.
http://www.primetimetrains.com

You can also try to get into contact with member Jacques Vuyes, who has gone back to Europe, but still remains a Maerklin and digital expert.

You can also try to check with Tom Catherall, who used to be Marklin USA's digital expert. He may still be reachable via the tom(at)marlin.com email address.
For us to provide you with additional assistance, please post photos of the inside of the A and B units as well as a scan or photo of the page from the instruction manual showing the diagram and part numbers.

It very well could be the Speaker is blown. I have a rail bus with sound and the speaker blew and it sounded really weird a few times and then eventually nothing. So it might be nothing more then a $10 fix. If everything is working on the locomotive except the sound I would suggest replacing the speaker first and seeing if that solves your problem. Could be a very easy fix.

Chris,

that is a good suggestion. I guess that you could take any speaker with a matching tolerance and just connect it to see if it was working.
Since the sound module is located in the A unit and the speaker in the B unit, it should not be difficult to locate the appropriate wires and terminals.

I don't know how exactly the speaker and chamber is designed, but you may have to bypass the Maerklin speaker chamber if you use a non-Maerklin speaker as a solution.
Consult the images and diagram for the 37622 that I provided in my last post and if possible, post photos of the interior as well as the instructions scan.

If you have another marklin f7,just take the speaker and make a trial.I have 37622-37623-37624,the speakers are the same.If it is working, get a new speaker.

Thanks for the advice, everyone.
I will implement your suggestions when I get time, after feb 20...meanwhile I must work on my "day job".

I plan to take some pictures then.
I have the little "booklet" which came with the loco, but not an exploded diagram.
Mike C: The inside of this loco does look just like the one mentioned: 37222.

Thanks again,

Boxcab

Hello, I had a similar sound problem with my CA Zepher 26600 and was unable to find the replacement speaker at the time, so we went to our local Railroad Hobbies store and matched it up to the one from Soundtraxx, part # 810054 , this one has the same specs and fits perfectly in the F7 tube as can be seen from the pictures. Simply remove the the locomotive housings, remove the speaker tube, remove the end of the tube to access the speaker, unsolder leads, solder leads to new speaker, reassemble, and you should be good to go. That is of course if the speaker is the problem and hopefully it is, as this inexpensive part will fix it.
