Marklin Alpha - Reflections on the Alpha Program

Hello all,
I saw Juhuan had purchased a Marklin Alpha locomotive in the loco purchase thread. It reminded me of the Alpha program (1988-1996). I remember seeing these in catalogs, especially 1989 where a young girl seemed to be trying to introduce the alpha loco in every other picture. However, I don't think I've ever seen one in person. I wanted to start a thread:
1.) Who has/had Alpha? 2.) Does it have any collectors value at the moment? 3.) Was the program successful (it was sort of bizarre IMO)?
Thanks!

Hi Brandon, Yes, there are people which collect ALPHA. Yes, there are ALPHA-items which are paid collector-prices. Especially but not only everthing yellow, but also the GAMA-boxed models. Also for strange colours which appear from time to time are paid high prices. No, ALPHA was not a really success. A good overview can be found here (German, but many pictures and tables): http://www.mayershofer.de/alpha/Regards Markus

Markus,
Interesting info. I had forgotten about the starter set boxes. I think that would a a great concept to employee in today's starter sets...

-Brandon I always thought the packs which included items like Tunnels, Buildings etc were a great idea, you actually had more of a "Train Set" in a package, not just a quickly-boring circle/oval of track and a train. Considering the low price 'My World' is now being sold for, what would be the additional cost to do similar Alpha packaging to add some 'bling' to the set? |

I might have a little Alpha - I think I am only missing 1 of the hard case sets. I forget which one right now though. The picture is mostly the add on cars and accessories. What kind of dork puts ALPAH in a display case??!! I hope someone gets the humor in it! Rick
