I was very excited to see in the 2013 new item catalog replicas of these nostalgia SJ models. I think Märklin have started an excellent marketing trend, which I hope they will continue in the years to come. That would give us the opportunity to see those beloved models from our childhood years again.

Now back to 30301 and 40301. I do like the timeless, Jurassic-like replica of the Da locomotive, Märklin heavy metal at its best. But, lo and behold! Upon much closer observation of the cars, I realize that those are not replicas of 4030 and 4031, with their corrugated walls and roofs, but rather they seem to be a release of D-Zug-Wagen in SJ livery! Now I don't remember ever seeing in Sweden any such D-Zug-Wagen-type cars (ABo24). Maybe someone on this forum can enlighten me? Whatever happened to the corrugated-wall cars????

Cheers!
Best regards,
Armando García

Looking at a Swedish language site and the subsection "Vagnguide" (Coach guide) and serching for ABo24 I got a hit on a German built coach that SJ had 6 of. They were used in trains to Berlin and Hamburg since all other SJ coaches are built to a wider load gauge than normally used in Germany and were not allowed in Germany*). A link to the Swedish site.

It could be noted that the Swedish coaches are only 23.5 m at a time when German coaches were 26.4 m. This means that a model being 24 cm is very close to 1:100 scale. Future will tell if the model will be as shown in the New Items brochure with 8 compartments or if it will have 9 as the prototype.

Unlike other Swedish coaches the ABo24 didn't have corrugated sides, they were flat as German coaches. In 1970 they were 'renamed' as class AB8K and one of these coaches, AB8K 4585, is part of the collections of the Swedish Railway Museum.

To summarize, this set contains a new model of an SJ coach and not a re-issue of 4030.

*) For those of you who know that the Berlin Night Express between Malmö and Berlin has been operated by SJ and last year by Veolia using Swedish WL and BC coaches, it should noted that the Swedish coaches are allowed only on certain lines between Sassnitz and Berlin and by special permission.

Thank you (tack så hemskt mycket!) for the link provided and for your detailed clarification on those ABo24 coaches of which I had absolutely no knowledge.

Given that that SJ train service to Berlin started in the 50's, I should suppose that the Da's might indeed have been the right locomotives on the SJ roster to pull those German coaches, probably until the Rc's came on the horizon and replaced the Da's.

Now, why did Märklin have to go to these far-fetched extremes and bring those ABo24 coaches instead of the SJ corrugated wall ones? Since these sets are supposed to be replicas of their "classic" models, isn't is logical (at least in my mind) that they would have reissued the likes of 4030 and 4031? Of course, my question will remain unanswered, as the Märklin marketing thought process is unfathomable. My only fed-back explanation is that either 1) they're cheap and just wanted to go the easy way with the moulds that they have readily available, or 2) they intend for us to use these SJ replicas together with other DB coaches from the newer tin plate collection to be able to put together a consist that would travel from Sweden into Germany, or else go figure!
Best regards,

My guess is that the tooling from the 4030 and 4031 have probably been disposed of long ago, as these coaches were replaced in 1968 by the plastic bodied 4072 and 4073.

On the other hand, the tooling for the 4051, 4052 etc was in use until about ten years ago when they discontinued the 24cm metal coaches, and were apparently still available. The 40301 set appears to use this same tooling.

Hi all,

Somewhat off topic but I thought I'd post here since it is a similar thread. I have been searching high and low for a nice original 4031 SJ Baggage car for a year or so now. If anyone has or knows of one please email/PM me as I would be very grateful. The ones I see on ebay always have rust or some larger flaw.

Thanks in advance!

There is one on Tradera, the Swedish branch of eBay, which started as a separate operation, later bought by eBay. Due to this history they still use their own software solution and thus cannot be seen on eBay and of course being geared towards the Swedish market only in Swedish:

By the way "mycket fin" means "very fine" or "in very good condition".

Then there is a shop in downtown Stockholm, Eskader, which is known for a rather high price level, but also for stocking old Märklin models, both used and unused and I have found some models there that I've searched for quite some time. I made a search for 4031 on their Internet-shop and found three 4031 in prices ranging from SEK 1,250:- to 695:- . Their Internet-shop is partly in English - what I suspect is that the database entries are probably only in Swedish and when you make a search, the presentation of results will be in English for general text and in Swedish for information stored in the database. It could still be worth a try! http://www.eskader.se/en/

By the way, "begagnad" means "used" or is "pre-owned" the proper term to be used? I've seen it at car dealers in my wife's native California. BigGrin
